James O. Bjornstad, 81, Grand Forks, formerly of Ada, MN, passed away Wednesday January 20, 2010, at Woodside Village in Grand Forks. He was born November 15, 1928, on a farmstead west of Nielsville, MN, to Hans and Tilda (Brodland) Bjornstad. He grew up on the farm, attended grade school in Nielsville and graduated from Climax (MN) High School. He is a 1951 graduate, with honors from Concordia College, Moorhead MN.
James married Delores Cassman in 1953, at Grace Lutheran Church in Ada. James was a Social Worker for Norman County for 39 years. He was proud to serve in anyway that he could. His biggest joy was working with adoptions. He was very active in Grace Lutheran Church. James taught Sunday School including many years teaching the adult class. He served on many boards and was active in Bible studies. His hobbies included gardening and he was especially proud of his roses. He loved to raise tomatoes but seldom ate them. His passion for raising them assured that neighbors and friends all ate well. He also loved camping, photography and relished the chance to go out for coffee and lunch. He was a member of the Sons of Norway for over 50 years and was proud of his Norwegian Heritage.
He is survived by his wife and two sons, Carl (Barbara) East Grand Forks MN, and Paul (Barbara) La Crosse, WI, two grandchildren, Richard Bjornstad, Grand Forks, ND, Christine Bjornstad, Thief River Falls, MN, one great grandson, Gerrit Bjornstad, Thief River Falls, MN, two sisters, Imogene Bjornstad Grand Forks, ND, and Ella (William) Coffing, New Brighton MN.
He was preceded in death by his parents, and one brother, Odin.
Funeral Service: 11:00AM, Tuesday, January 26, 2010, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, MN, with visitation one hour before services.
Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.
