Howard Nelson, 84, Shelly, MN, died Thursday, August 2, 2012, at Sanford Palliative Care Hospital, Fargo, ND.
Howard was born December 27, 1927, at home, rural Hendrum, MN, the son of Nick and Mollie (Opheim) Nelson. He was baptized at St. Pauli Lutheran Church near Hendrum and confirmed at Kirkebo Lutheran Church in Perley. He first attended country school at the Wide Awake School followed by high school at Perley and Hendrum. In 1950, he was drafted into the U.S. Army. His basic training was at Fort Belvoir, VA. The remainder of his duty-time was spent at Fort Leonard Wood, MO. He was a motor pool mechanic. In 1953, he enrolled at North Dakota State University in Fargo and received a master's degree in mechanical engineering.
On September 17, 1961, Howard was united in marriage to Nancy Folstad in Shelly. They were blessed with two children, David and Janet. Howard worked for John Deere in Iowa from 1959 to 1973 before moving home to Shelly. He farmed for a number of years and also worked for G & R Equipment in Halstad, the Shelly Elementary School, and the City of Shelly electrical and waste water department for several years. He served on the Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church council as secretary, trustee, and president. He also sang in the church choir and with the Inspirations Group for a number of years. Howard served on the Shelly City Council for 12 years. His hobbies included working on cars, construction work, and watching sports on TV, especially the Vikings and Twins. The last years he stayed busy remodeling their house in Shelly.
Howard is survived by his wife, Nancy, son David of Portland, OR, daughter, Janet (Kym) Grove, Shelly, MN, 3 grandchildren, Rachel, Taylor, and Megan Grove, 3 brothers, Robert (Ardell) Nelson, Helena, MT, Neal (Lois) Nelson, Albuquerque, NM, and Marvin (Marci) Nelson, Tahuya, WA. He was preceded in death by his parents.
Funeral Service: 11:00 AM Wednesday, August 8, 2012, at Shelly Marsh River Lutheran Church, Shelly, MN.
Visitation: 5-7pm Tuesday with a 7pm prayer service at Fredrikson Valley Funeral Home, Halstad, MN.
Burial: Shelly Cemetery, rural Shelly, MN.
