Obituary

Howard Milton Erickson, 91, died on January 27, 2014, at the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, MN. Howard was born in Herman, MN, on September 3, 1922, to Oscar and Edna (Johnson) Erickson. He moved with his family to Dilworth, MN, where he attended school and graduated from Moorhead High School, Moorhead, MN. He enlisted in the US Army in 1942, and was later honorably discharged. In 1946, Howard began teaching in Fertile-Beltrami School District. On March 31, 1947, Howard was united in marriage to Mona Sandberg at Fertile. They operated the H&M Grocery Store until 1956, when they moved to Hawley, MN, and Howard taught Social Studies and coached basketball. In 1959, they moved to Albert Lea, MN, and Howard taught Social Studies, as well as some coaching. He attended Mankato State Teachers College while working in Albert Lea, where he received his MA degree in Guidance Counseling. He then, in 1966, moved to and began working in Columbia Heights, MN, as a guidance counselor, until he retired in the mid 1980's. After retirement, they made their home in Sun City West, AZ. Mona died in 2005 and Howard moved to Summerfield apartments in Fertile in 2006. He entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home in 2009. Howard was on the Board of Home Owner Association at Sun City West, AZ and a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile. He liked all sports: golf, baseball (Twins), football and basketball. He was an avid reader and enjoyed cooking. Being an avid walker, Howard stayed fit and was able to meet and see many things. Howard is survived by one son, William (Judie) Erickson, San Diego, CA; two granddaughters: Kara (John) Lamerato and Kate Erickson, both of San Diego, CA; one great granddaughter, Stella Lamerato; sisters-in-law: Karen Johnson, Joyce Downs, both of Fertile and Patti Schumann, Glenburn, ND; and many nephews and nieces. He is preceded in death by his wife, Mona, a sister, Phyllis Lasley and a twin brother, Harold.


Services will be at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN. at 11:00am, Saturday, June 14, 2014.

Inurnment: Concordia Cemetery, Fertile, MN, immediately after service and lunch immediately after cemetery.
