Herbert G. Johnsen, 98, Virginia, MN, formerly of Ada, MN, died Wednesday, January 21, 2015, at St. Michaels Health and Rehab Center in Virginia.

Herb was born January 17, 1917 in Le Mars, Iowa, to Louis and Mary (Osterbuhr) Johnsen. He moved to Lockhart with his family as a young boy.

On December 10, 1938, Herb married Elsie Merkens in Zion Lutheran Church, Ada, MN. Herb had been involved in farming, automotive work as a mechanic, and some carpentry. Over the years, he worked for Anderson Lumber and Simpson Motors of Ada. Herb was a quiet, faithful member of Zion Lutheran Church, where he used his gifts and talents to serve the Lord. His carpentry skills can still be observed around the church. Elsie passed away in 1993. Herb married Bernice in 1994, and in 1997, they moved to Embarrass in the Iron Range of Minnesota. They lived in the country on a section of land for a time before he entered the nursing home in 2005. Bernice passed away in 2013.

Herb is survived by several nieces and nephews, including Marcella Kappes, Marilyn Gunderson, Milton Luchau, Jean Brewster, LeRoy Luchau, and Steve Luchau. He was preceded in death by his parents; wives, Elsie and Bernice; and siblings Lou Wayne Johnsen and Evelyn Luchau Johnson.

Graveside services were held on Friday, January 23, at the Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.
