Herbert Griewe, age 83, of Gary, Minnesota, died on Sunday, January 18, 2009 at the Twin Valley Living Center in Twin Valley, MN.

Herbert LeRoy Griewe was born June 17, 1925 the son of Herman and Hulda (Habedank) Griewe in Ada, Minnesota. He grew up on the family farm in Green Meadow Township, rural Ada, and also attended country school near his home. Herb was baptized and confirmed his faith in St. John's Lutheran Church, rural Ada. As a young man, Herb began farming as well as doing carpentry work in the area. He also spent a short time working in California but then returned home to Minnesota. On August 6, 1949 Herb was united in marriage to Corrine Hanson at St. John's Lutheran Church. The couple made their home near there for about a year before purchasing a farm northwest of Gary. Along with farming, Herb was employed at the ACS office in Ada for about five years. He then acquired more land and began a dairy farm. Together, Herb and Corrine, operated the dairy farm for many years. Upon Herb's retirement in 1988 their son, Bruce, rented the land and recently purchased it. Herb continued to make his home on the farm until this past August, at which time he became a resident of the Twin Valley Living Center.

Herb served on the Spring Creek Township board for many years. He enjoyed many outdoor activities including hunting and snowmobiling. In the summer, Herb could be found out in his vegetable garden, which he was also very good at preserving. He also greatly enjoyed raising chickens and selling eggs to neighbors. He will be long remembered for his cooking talent and baking of cookies. Herb often shared his baked goods with family, friends, and the nurses that cared for him - by whom he was tenderly known as the "Cookie Man."

Herb is survived by his wife, Corrine of Twin Valley, MN; a son, Bruce (Denise) Griewe and a daughter, Bonnie (Gene) Werpy all of Gary, MN; two sisters, Ruth Adkins of Moorhead, MN and Gladys Klucas of Minneapolis, MN and seven grandchildren, Teresa, Aaron and Monica Werpy, Wendy (Jesse) Thymion, Nathan (Rita) Griewe, and Jessica and Ashley Griewe.

He is preceded in death by his parents; four brothers, Ervin, Edward, Lawrence and Donald; two sisters, Gloria Larson and Erma Griewe; a grandson, Nicholas Werpy and a dear nephew, Virgil Anderson.

Funeral Services was held on Friday, January 23, 2009 at 10:30 AM in St. Johns Lutheran Church, rural Ada. Officiating was Pastor Arvid Salvhus with Lori Salvhus serving as organist and Alden Anderson serving as vocalist. Pallbearers was Danny Grieve, Steve Grieve, Christopher Lee, Roger Lee, Floyd Hanson and Dean Bennefeld. Honorary pallbearers was his grandchildren.
