Helen Elizabeth
Huseby
Apr 11, 1921 — Apr 27, 2020
Helen Elizabeth Huseby passed away shortly after her 99 th birthday on April 27, 2020 at The Commons on Marice in Eagan, MN. She always predicted she would live to be 100 years old or older. She did not make that milestone, but Helen packed a lot of adventure into her life.
Helen was born on April 11, 1921 to John Clifford McIntire and Phoebe Telijah (Trump) McIntire. She joined her sisters, Elna M. McIntire and Roberta M. McIntire, and a brother James Richard McIntire. Helen grew up in Roundup, Montana, where her father was a telegrapher for the Railroad. After graduating from school, Helen joined the Army, WAAC. She served in the Army as a Court Stenographer. As a Court Reporter for the Military Court of Law, she recorded court proceedings by shorthand. Her shorthand skills earned her many accolades during her military career, and she continued to use shorthand all her life. The skill was instrumental in her job as secretary to Edward R. Murrow, the World War II war correspondent and broadcast journalist.
Helen received several medals while in the military, including the WAAC Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, American Campaign Medal and the World War II Victory Medal. Helen was honorably discharged from the Army as a Staff Sergeant in 1945 and was always incredibly proud of her military service. She then worked at the United States Embassy in Seoul, South Korea. She transferred from there to work at the US Embassy in Rio de Janerio, and for a time worked at the Pentagon in Washington D.C. Helen added fluent Spanish speaking to her resume, another skill she maintained all her life.
It was while Helen was working in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, that she met Clayton Huseby at an embassy party. Clayton was in Rio working for Sperry-Univac, later Unisys, installing a computer system for the Brazilian government. Helen and Clayton were married in South Dakota in 1963 and began a journey together that spanned more than a half a century, until Clayton passed away in 2014. They traveled extensively for Clayton's work and just for enjoyment. Helen and Clayton lived in several places, eventually moving to Trenton, New Jersey where Clayton was Director of Unisys Worldwide Computer Education in Princeton, NJ. Clayton retired after 31 years in New Jersey and they moved to Clayton's home state of Minnesota. They never had any children, but enjoyed a particularly close relationship with Clayton's niece, Karen Dinsmore, and her family in Minnesota. Karen has been a kind caregiver to both Helen and Clayton over the years.
Helen was strongly political. She never hesitated to express her opinion in written form to the folks in D.C. when she disagreed with them, or even when she agreed with them. She kept well informed on the politics of the time and followed bills, legislators and party lines. She was always game for political dialogue with anyone who dared venture into a discussion. She read newspapers with an eye for detail, could get through a Minneapolis or New York Times crossword puzzle in no time at all and was a fierce scrabble player. Not surprisingly, Helen lived an incredibly independent life, living on her own until the day she passed away. She was an incredible woman who lived an amazing life and she will be terribly missed.
Helen is predeceased by her husband, Clayton Huseby, her parents, John and Phoebe, her sisters, Elna M. Jackson and Roberta M. Ice, her brothers, John, Joseph and James Richard McIntire, and a nephew, Roger Ice. She is survived by Karen and Mark Dinsmore of Minnesota; nephews, John (Joan) Jackson and Dick Jackson of Dillon, Montana; nieces, Elena (Aaron) Pfister of Hot Springs, Montana, and Jean (Kirk) Bergeson of Dillon, Montana; nephew, Randy Ice of California, as well as numerous great nieces and nephews.
Graveside Service: 1:00 PM, Thursday , September 3, 2020 at Immanuel Lutheran Cemetery, Hendrum, MN.
