Harris Garberg, age 87, of Twin Valley, MN, died Sunday, April 15, 2018, in the Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley.
Harris Philmon was born to Selvin and Bertha (Shlystad) Garberg on October 20, 1930, in Underwood, MN. He was raised on the family farm and attended grade school in Underwood. Following his high school graduation from West Central Ag School in Morris, MN, Harris worked at the Red Owl Store in Fergus Falls, MN. He entered the Army National Guard and served with the 136 th Infantry during the Korean Conflict. Harris was united in marriage to Phyllis Arneson on October 14, 1952, in Fergus Falls, MN. The couple made their home in Fergus Falls until 1957 when they moved to Fargo, ND, where Harris worked for Gamble-Robinson. In 1966, they moved to Twin Valley where Harris owned and operated Hartz Grocery Store. He also owned and operated a grocery store in Mahnomen, MN, for a few years before selling it to the Bruggeman Family. Harris sold his Hartz Grocery store to his son and daughter-in-law, Bruce and Theresa, in 1989. After selling the store, he sold hearing aids for a couple of years and then real estate until he fully retired in his early 70's. Harris retired but remained very active volunteering in the community and keeping busy with his grandchildren.
In his spare time, Harris enjoyed fishing and spending time at the cabin on Tulaby Lake for family get-togethers and cook outs. He also enjoyed time spent working on woodworking projects. Harris will be remembered by many for his hearty laugh, contagious smile and generous personality which left an impression on everyone he met. Over the years, he gave of his time and talent with several organizations including City Council, Fire Department, Lions Club, American Legion, VFW and the board of directors for L.B. Hartz and the Twin Valley State Bank. Harris was an active member of Zion Lutheran Church and served as a church delegate for multiple terms.
Harris is survived by his wife of 65 years, Phyllis; his daughter, Karen (Steve) Dahl of Dekalb, IL; his sons: Bryan (Clare) Garberg of Lake Park, MN, William (Marcia) Garberg of Hutchinson, MN, and Bruce (Theresa) Garberg of Twin Valley; 14 grandchildren: Andra (Nathan) Kuznia, Kristofer Garberg, Adam Garberg (Colie Clapp), Maggie (Nikoli) Falenschek, Matthew Garberg, Liz Bennett; Jessica Garberg, Ashley Garberg, Gretchen Garberg, Zachary Garberg (Kasey Boman), Kelly (Jerry) Vanderhedyt, Benjamin Dahl, Leslie Cannon, Michael (Kalee) Garberg, and Jon Garberg (Haley Haroldson); 13 great-granchildren: Emma, Logan, Makenna, Quinn, Jonathan, Devon, Braden, Jackson, Monroe, Dior, Peyton, Gavin, and Madison; and his sisters: Evelace Hanson, Beatrice Goranson, Arvis (David) Olson, and Victoria (Daryle) Teske. He is preceded in death by his parents and a granddaughter, Abby.
Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, April 21, 2018 at 10:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. A time of gathering will be Friday, April 20, 2018 from 5:00-7:00 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, Twin Valley. Inurnment will take place at Zion Lutheran Cemetery.
