Obituary

Harald Moen, age 86, of Ulen, MN, died Friday, January 31, 2014, at Twin Valley Living Center under Hospice Care of the Red River Valley.

Harald Ingvald Moen was born at home on November 8, 1927, the youngest son of Eddie and Inga (Bakken) Moen. He was baptized and confirmed into the Lutheran faith. Harald grew up on a farm northwest of Ulen and attended country school. Following his schooling, he helped on the family farm. On March 16, 1953, Harald entered the United States Army, serving during the Korean Conflict. He was honorably discharged on March 8, 1955, and returned to the Ulen area. He spent the better part of his life, living on the farm and taking care of his parents until their deaths. Harald, with his father and brother, harvested small grains and raised cattle. He later farmed for many years with his nephew, Wayne, eventually putting the acres into CRP. He proudly made his home on that century farm in a house his grandfather built only to sell the remaining cattle from that century farm when he was 79 years old. In addition to farming, Harald spent 17 years working the sugar beet campaign at the plant in Moorhead, MN. He also worked seasonally at the Tri-County Co-op for many years. He remained on the farm until recently when his health required him to move into the Twin Valley Living Center.
Harald would drive to the senior center in Ulen each day to have coffee and visit. He loved to visit with folks. In his spare time, he also enjoyed reading westerns and watching sports, especially football. In his younger years, Harald was an avid hunter and fisherman and liked being in the outdoors.

Harald was a lifelong member of Bethlehem Lutheran Church and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He also held membership with the Ulen American Legion.

Surviving Harald are two sisters-in-law, Doris Moen, Ulen, and Helen Moen, Brooksville, FL; eight nieces and nephews; several great nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers, Oliver and Johan; and one nephew, David.
