Hale Pope, age 78, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Sunday, May 3, 2020 at the Mahnomen Health Center, Mahnomen, MN.

Hale Pope was born on January 26 ^th , 1942 at his parents' home in Lynd, MN, to William and Bernadine (Stewart) Pope.  He lived and went to school in Lynd, and later married Marlys Teichert. He worked at Appleton Silo Company, Marshall, MN, for a few years, before moving to the Waubun area.  While in the Waubun area he worked for a number of places: Witchcraft, Anderson Lumber Yard, Jim Stech Lumber, Miller Plumbing, and Abbot Arne Schwindt of Moorhead as well as doing some Leeching on occasion.

Before the couple divorced, Hale and Marlys raised 6 children: Janell (Richard) Soyring, Dale (Diane) Pope, Mark (Mark) Pope, Lisa (Dan) Schoenborn, Marcy Mehr, and Kyle Pope.

Hale enjoyed being outdoors and tinkering with things, sometime, breaking things that were not broken. Lucky for him his PCA and close friend, Kate, would be there on occasion to stop him.  He had a special place in his heart for animals.  Hale loved his dogs, Yeller was the last one, but he would take in whatever made its way to his doorstep including bunnies and horses.    He would listen to the radio at max volume whether it was old country music (Hank Williams, Box Car Willie, Conway and Loretta, Patsy Cline, and Merle Haggard- just to name a few), or a Swap and Shop channel, News, and even tune in on occasion when he was told his grandchildren were playing sports on the radio. Until Hale lost his leg, he was going to try get back into fishing, which he greatly enjoyed. Although his body was beat down after a number of accidents, cancer and other medical ailments, it did not hinder his desire to be outside.  Hale's son, Kyle, who had been taking care of him recently, would often push him out on the deck just so he could enjoy it.

Hale is survived by his ex-wife, Marlys; Janell (Richard) Soyring of Mahnomen and grand-children, Ricky and Latanya;  Dale (Diane) Pope of Cascade, MD, and  grandchildren, Allison and Andrew; Mark (Mark) Pope of Thief River Falls, MN; Lisa (Dan) Schoenborn of Mahnomen and grandchildren, Jason and Brian; Marcy Mehr also of Mahnomen and grandchildren: Donny, Sarah, Mason and Curtis; Kyle Pope of Waubun and grandchildren: Jonah, Ethan, Gabriella, Arianna and Ashton; and 12 great-grandchildren.  He is also survived by his older siblings: Brandt (Ellie) Pope of Marshall, MN, Lorraine (Jr.) Strom of Lynd, MN, and Curt (Jenny) Pope also of Lynd.

Welcoming him into eternal life are his parents, William and Bernadine Pope, and siblings Nyla (Ed) Hipp, Hollis (Jon) Waugh, and Vernon Pope

Private Inurnment will take place at Lake Grove Lutheran Cemetery, rural Waubun.
