Glen G.
Thune
Jun 5, 1923 — Feb 6, 2019
Twin Valley
Glen George Thune was born to Emil and Gertrude (Kvall) Thune on June 5, 1923 on a farm near Thief River Falls, MN. He was baptized and confirmed in faith at St. Pauli Lutheran Church, rural Thief River Falls. He attended Hathorne Country School. Glen was employed by Land O'Lakes Trucks before enlisting in the merchant marines where he proudly served his country until his honorable discharge. Glen was united in marriage to Beverly Schalz on March 24, 1945 in Thief River Falls. The couple moved to Twin Valley in 1953 where he owned and operated the Produce Feed & Seed store. He then purchased a used auto business and moved it to Highway 32, running it as Thune's Used Autos. Glen enjoyed selling cars at the lot until his formal retirement, and even after, he continued selling used cars simply out of his yard. He made his home at the Twin Valley Living Center from 2016 until October 2018 at which time he moved, with his wife, to the Halsted Living Center. Glen passed away with Bev by his side, on February 6, 2019, under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley, at the age of 95.
A true cowboy is what Glen will always be remembered as. He was an avid horse rider that was passionate about teaching his family to ride. He received great enjoyment out of buying, selling, and breaking horses. Glen was frequently referred to as one of the best horsemen around, riding in parades, all the way up to age 90. He was a founder and lifetime member of the Twin Valley Rider's Club. Glen and Bev proudly rode on the North Dakota Centennial wagon ride from Abercrombie to Mandan, for a total of 246 miles on horseback, in 16 days. Glen was also a longtime member of the Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley.
Glen is survived by his wife of nearly 74 years, Beverly; his daughter, Bonnie Dittmer of Billings, MT; two sons, Daniel of West Fargo, ND and Dean (Diane) of Fargo, ND; seven grandchildren, eleven great-grandchildren; two sisters-in-law, Arlene A. Thune and Alice Thune; Galen's lifelong girlfriend, Lora; and many nieces, nephews, and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents; his son, Galen; his grandson, Jamie; and his siblings, Palmer (Shirley), Ernie, Arlene L, Donald (LaVonne), and Norrie.
Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 AM on Monday, February 11, 2019 at Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. Visitation will be one hour prior to the funeral at the church. Burial will be at the Twin Valley Memorial Gardens.
