Gerald "Bud" Iverson, age 95, of Mahnomen, MN, died Sunday, March 30, 2014, at Emmanuel Nursing Home, Detroit Lakes, MN.
Gerald Aaland Iverson, son of Neil and Mabel (Goodrich) Iverson, was born on August 8, 1918 on his parent's farm East of Twin Valley, MN in Norman County. When he was just a few months old, Gerald moved with his parents to Mahnomen, MN where he lived for five years before moving back to the farm. Gerald was baptized and confirmed at St Olaf Lutheran Church near the farm. He attended the #102 Norman County country school until 8 th grade and graduated from Mahnomen High School in 1936. On November 11, 1944 Bud was united in marriage to Mildred Urdahl and to this union was born five sons: David, Dennis, Douglas, James, and Jeffrey. In 1946, they purchased a farm in Fossum Township, rural Twin Valley, where they farmed together for 16 years before moving into Twin Valley in 1962. During his years on the farm, he was treasurer of Faith School district until its closure. He also served as a township officer of Fossum Township. In the early 1950's the Faith School closed and Bud was elected on the new consolidated school board in Twin Valley. He was on the board of education during the reorganizing and building of the new school. While living in Twin Valley, Bud was employed by the Twin Valley Co-Op Oil Company and he took management training in St. Paul, MN. In 1987, they moved back to Mahnomen where he worked with Farmer's Union Oil Company. Bud served as manager of Farmer's Union for a few years a stayed active with the company as a furnace service rep for the following 10 years. At the age of 55, Bud ran for County Register of Deeds and held that position until his retirement at the age of 67. Mildred passed away in 2009 and Bud continued to make his home in Mahnomen until moving to Emmanuel Nursing Home in 2010.
Bud was a talented musician and incorporated music into all parts of his life. He enjoyed participating in quartets, choirs, and playing saxophone with his boys. Bud was very strong in his Lutheran Faith and was active at St. Olaf, Zion and First Lutheran Church's. He served as President and Secretary of Luther League and was also the first president of the Lutheran Brotherhood at St Olaf. As time went on, Bud served various officer positions within the churches. He was a Sunday school teacher as well as the Superintendent of the Sunday school program for many years. Bud also loved to visit and catch up on the local news while drinking coffee at the Red Apple Café round table.
Bud is survived by five sons: David (Linda) of Detroit Lakes, MN, Dennis (JoAnn) of Perham, MN, Douglas of Fargo, ND, James (Bonnie) of Fergus Falls, MN, and Jeffrey (Kathy) of Staples, MN, one sister, Margaret Anderson; eleven grandchildren, and six great grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, two brothers; Milton Iverson and Russell Iverson and two sisters; Beata Recasen and Roselle Slayton.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, April 6, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen.
Inurnment will be held at First Lutheran Cemetery, Mahnomen.
