Gerald Duane Finke, the only child of Harry and Vivian (Nei) Finke, was born on September 15, 1940, in Mahnomen, MN. He was both baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church where he remained a lifelong member. Growing up in Mahnomen, Gerald graduated high school with the class of 1958. As a young man, he worked construction and spent time in the taconite mines. On August 12, 1961, Gerald was united in marriage to Gloria Snetsinger, beginning their 55 year journey together. They were blessed with two daughters, Carla and Paula. The couple first lived in Mahnomen then moved to Duluth, MN for a time where Gerald worked for Matheson Tire Company. They decided to return home to the Mahnomen area and Gerald began working for B.C Ness. He later purchased a garbage truck, which he proudly owned and operated, providing sanitary services to Mahnomen County for over 30 years. Following his retirement, Gerald was employed by the Shooting Star Casino as a chauffeur, a job he truly enjoyed as he got to meet and visit with famous entertainers. Besieged with health issues, Gerald maintained a positive outlook but was ready to go "Home". He suffered a fall, which was more than his weakened body could handle and at the age of 76, Gerald peacefully passed away at home.
Gerald loved to drive his motorhome and go on camping trips. He and Gloria made many wonderful memories, appreciated the scenery, and made new friends while RVing. He also enjoyed fishing and cherished his time on the lake. He liked to dance and loved to take Gloria for a spin on the dance floor. Gerald was a valued member of the Mahnomen Volunteer Fire Department for many years and he also served with the Lions. When Gerald felt strongly about something, his feisty side took over and he would respectfully argue his point. His spunky personality was evident with his good humor right along with it. Most of all, Gerald loved to visit and was never too busy to stop and have a cup of coffee, eat a cookie or two, and share a story with friends.
Gerald is survived by his wife, Gloria of Mahnomen; two daughters, Carla Finke of Woodbury, MN and Paula (Robert) Schneider of Fargo, ND; and one granddaughter, Sydney Schneider. He was preceded in death by his parents and his beloved dog, Beau.
