Obituary

George Edward Libby Sr., age 58 of Strawberry Lake, Ogema, MN died Thursday, September 10, 2009 at his residence as the result of a tragic house fire.

George was born June 18, 1951 at White Earth Indian Hospital to Herbert Ike and Thelma Ozetta (Thompson) Libby in White Earth, MN. George was raised in a very large family being one of twelve siblings. As a youngster, he attended school in the Detroit Lakes, MN school system. After his schooling, George joined the Army in 1969 with basic training at Fort Lewis, WA and was later deployed to Vietnam. Upon his honorable discharge, he resided in Minneapolis, MN for several years and then moved back to Detroit Lakes for a number of years. On July 22, 1975, George was united in marriage to Myrna Smith of Callaway and together they had three children, Violet, Lita, and George Jr. George has lived in several different places of the years: Lake Park, MN, New Mexico and for a short time he lived with his daughter, Violet, in Ulen, MN. He made his way back to the White Earth, MN and to his current home at Strawberry Lake, outside of Ogema. George was a proud member of the White Earth Native Honor Guard. He was a professional native arts crafter and his work is known to many people. He enjoyed and attended Pow Wows throughout his life and often performed dances with the full regalia that he made.

George is survived by two daughters: Violet (William) Bittner of Ulen and Lita (Rick) Doran of Audubon, MN; one son, George (Jill Thompson) Libby Jr. of Detroit Lakes; six brothers: Gene (Sandy) and Robert (Sharon) all of White Earth, and James (Bev), Jerry (Judy), Thomas (Jean) all of Ogema and William; two sisters: Mary (Zeb) Shaugabay of Warroad, MN and Janice Parisian of Waubun, MN; and nine grandchildren.

George is preceded in death by his parents; grandmother, Mary Libby; one brother, Richard; four sisters: Phyllis, Lola, Gloria and Carol.

A memorial service will be held Tuesday, January 19, 2010 at 3 pm at the White Earth Community Center with a time of gathering one hour prior to the funeral.
