Twin Valley
Watch Gen's Funeral Service
Genella Elaine (Hogenson) Fuglie returned to her Lord Savior Jesus Christ on November 24, 2018.
She was born to Alvi and Calma (Bordalen) Hogenson on November 12, 1924 in Goose Prairie Township, the second of their six children. Gen was a child of the depression, wife of a WWII soldier, farm wife, nurse and most importantly, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She will be remembered for her devotion to family, great cooking, and generous spirit.
Gen married Allan Fuglie on December 3, 1943 at her parents' home in Hagen Township. Soon after, in 1945, she lived with her in-laws while Allan was stationed in Japan. Her first son, Richard, was born shortly after Allan was drafted into the Army. Her marriage was filled with new adventures, including three more children: Karen, Dwight and Paul. In 1957, they moved from the farm to the Iron Range followed by moves to Lake Park and Twin Valley.
After her children were grown, Gen went to nursing school where she received her LPN degree and was the Honor Graduate of her class. She worked for many years at the Twin Valley Living Center where her husband Allan, later her son Dwight were administrators. They both lived the Lutheran Memorial Mission Statement "Living With A Caring Family." In 1980, Allan passed away from a stroke and Gen continued to work at the Living Center until her retirement at age 72.
Gen's next adventure took her to Upper Cormorant Lake where she continued to live and host her family at the lake. Her kids, grandkids, and great grandkids all enjoyed the beauty and adventure of being at the lake. Known as "Grandma Good Cooker", the family loved spending extended time with her.
In 2013, Gen sold her lake home and permanently moved to the Normandy Apartments in Twin Valley. She continued to make her home there until October 2018. After a brief illness, Gen passed away at Ecumen in Detroit Lakes. She continued to be independent to the end, paying her own bills for the last time on November 23. She will be loved and remembered as a caring, kind and special lady. Her strength, resilience, and willingness to go on and thrive in life regardless of adversity was truly remarkable. Her deep faith and prayer life sustained her in life and will be her legacy in passing. May her legacy live on in all our hearts and sustain us in our lives.
Gen is survived her son, Paul (Deb) of Malakoff, Texas; her daughter, Karen of Sartell, MN; two daughters-in-law, Ardelle Mickelson of Ashland, WI and Gerry Fuglie of Detroit Lakes, MN; grandchildren: Matthias (Christine) Tanch of Germany, Amy (Duane) Childs of Milaca, MN, Katherine (Brian) Crowe of Grand Rapids, MN, Alice (Mark) Rammel of St. Cloud, MN, Luke (Holly) Fuglie of Fargo, ND, David Fuglie of Richardson, TX, Matthew (Lauren) Fuglie of Houston, TX, and Kristen Fuglie of Wylie, TX; 10 great grand-children; her sister, Helen (Donald) Gunderson of Moorhead, MN; and her brother-in-law, Duane (Kathy) Fuglie of Ulen, MN.
