Service update information for Gary:
Memorial Service: 2:00 PM, Tuesday, July 13, 2021 at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN.
Gary A. Werner, 80, Fertile, MN passed away on Wednesday, November 4, 2020, at Fair Meadow Nursing Home in Fertile.
Gary A. Werner was born February 8, 1940 to Alex and Adelma Werner in Grafton, North Dakota. Gary was baptized and confirmed in the Lutheran Faith at Christ Lutheran in Neche, North Dakota.
As early as the 4th grade, Gary wanted to be a teacher. After graduating from high school, he attended Mayville State Teachers College. Gary met his wife, Mavis, at college and they were married on August 18, 1962. In 1962, he also began his 35 year teaching career in St. Thomas, North Dakota. In 1964, Gary took a teaching position in Fertile, Minnesota where he continued to teach for 33 more years. During the summers of 1967-1969, Gary and family moved to Ohio for Gary to attend Bowling Green State University, where Gary earned his Master's Degree in Mathematics.
Gary was very active in the Fertile community. He was a member of the Jaycees, the Lions Club for 56 years, on the EMS roster for 19 years, and a Cub Master for Pack 185 for 19 years. Gary was active with Concordia Lutheran Church as the financial secretary for 19 years, a council member, and a Treasurer for Conference 3 of the Northwest MN Synod.
Over the summers Gary tried his hand at many different jobs, everything from hauling sugar beets to selling encyclopedias. He loved to stay busy so he spent many summers doing painting and construction jobs with fellow teachers.
Gary has always been a lover of music. When in college, he would stop at the music store in Grafton, North Dakota nearly every Friday night on his way home to Neche and pick up a 45. He has quite a collection of vinyl; which is almost entirely country western music. He also loved beautiful Christian music.
Gary liked to challenge himself and was a jack of many trades. He loved fixing cars, assembling stereo systems, building kitchen cupboards for his home, electronics repair and wiring houses. There wasn't anything he couldn't do.
Gary entered Fair Meadow Nursing Home on July 12, 2018, and passed away on November 4, 2020 after a two-week fight with Covid-19.
Gary is survived by his loving wife, Mavis; four children, Guy and wife Yolanda, Glenn and wife Peggy, Mary and husband Gene, and Marcia and husband Randy; 19 grandchildren, Bethani, Michael, Zane, Trysten, Jayce, Lexa, Nicia, Alex, Jack, Kurt, Bronson, Marshall, Eva, Peyton, Cole, Briana, Paxton, Kate and Kai; one brother, Cleon and wife Gayle; and many nieces and nephews.
