Obituary

Beloved husband, brother, uncle, mentor, and friend, Gary Paul Litzau, passed away peacefully at home on February 11, 2025, surrounded by loved ones. He was 71 years young.

Born in Detroit Lakes, Minnesota, to Ferdinand and Lillian (Norcross) Litzau, Gary's life was defined by a remarkable blend of warmth, humor, and generosity. He grew up in a home built by his father in Park Rapids. His childhood was storybook like, filled with days enjoying lake life, family gatherings, and mischief with brothers and buddies. Gary was an entrepreneur from an early age- at seventeen he purchased the pizza shop where he worked. "Gary's Pizza" became a local favorite and people still rave about it today. Later, he owned and operated Quiznos in Detroit Lakes. Gary had an enterprising spirit, strong work ethic, creativity and keen business acumen; along with a welcoming smile and warm greeting for every customer. He proudly served in the National Guard and carried his patriotism throughout his life.

Gary had an extraordinary career in the casino and hospitality industry, where he was admired as a sharp dresser, a thoughtful mentor, and a master of guest service. He understood the psychology of gaming, planned spectacular events down to the last detail, and was deeply respected by colleagues and guests alike. He was a staunch supporter of band member development. He encouraged and promoted the next generation to reach their full potential. Known for his humor, kindness, and infectious positivity, Gary left a lasting impression wherever he went.

A lifelong music enthusiast, Gary loved attending concerts, booking entertainers, and proudly collecting autographs and photos. As a child in Park Rapids, he used his allowance to buy records—never imagining he'd one day meet many of the artists he admired. He often said, "everything is a song," always matching music to life's moments.

While working in marketing at the Shooting Star Casino, he met Sharon Jirik who lovingly became known as "Cookie". They married August 2, 2014, and enjoyed 10½ years of love, laughter, humor, music & entertainment, travel and most important, time with family.

Gary was also an avid movie-watcher, a passionate Green Bay Packers fan (to the amusement of Vikings supporters), and a fantastic cook who delighted in perfecting new recipes. In retirement, he enjoyed working on home and yard projects and spending time with Sharon and loved ones.

Even through his battle with metastatic lung cancer, Gary never complained. He brought joy, humor, and gratitude to everyone around him—caregivers included, who dubbed him their "favorite patient."

Gary is survived by his wife, Sharon (Jirik) Litzau; his nephew, whom he had a special relationship, Lee (Kathy) Frohman; and his goddaughter, JoLyn (Travis) Czerny. He is also survived by his siblings: Carol (Larry) Olson, Sue Frohman, Josephine Baxter, and Ken Litzau; in-laws: Lori (Jerry) Handyside, Cindy (Keith) Gruhot, and Mike (Michelle) Jirik, as well as many beloved nieces, nephews, extended family, and friends.

He is preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Robert "Bob" Litzau; his grandparents, Josephine and George Norcross; nephews, Scott Olson and Greg Olson; great niece, Cierra Rae Olson; great nephew, Ferdinand John Litzau; and his cherished in-laws, Albert "Papa J" Jirik and LuElla "Mama Lu" Jirik.

Gary's legacy is one of love, laughter, music and eternal optimism. His impact on all who knew him will never be forgotten and he will be deeply missed.
