Obituary

Gary Greene, age 63, of Detroit Lakes, MN, died on Wednesday, March 8, 2023, at his home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Gary Richard Greene, the son of Charles and Dorothy (Jackson) Greene, was born on June 25, 1959, in Detroit Lakes, MN.  As a child, he lived in Detroit Lakes where he attended elementary school.  Gary was baptized and confirmed in the Episcopal Christian faith.  He was very proud of his Native American Heritage and valued his culture.  At the young age of 12, he began working alongside family learning the construction and drywall trades. Gary showed skill and worked harder than a man twice his age. As a struggling young teenager, Gary moved to Glyndon, MN, to live with his brother, Andy.   Proudly, he was active in school sports and graduated from Glyndon High School with academic honors.  He furthered his studies and became a drywall journeyman.  After working locally for a time, Gary and his brother, David, searched for more jobs in the Minneapolis area.  They spent many years working for Classic Drywall as a member of the union.  Gary tackled various construction projects but was exceptional at hanging and finishing drywall.  He could overcome any obstacle and solve any problem that arrived on the worksite.  Although he made his living in the cities, Gary always called Detroit Lakes home.  Unable to work as his physical and mental health declined, Gary recently enjoyed a quieter life at home with family.

Throughout his life, Gary was very active. He was a golden glove boxer and played baseball. He had a great pitch and could knock a homerun out of the park.   He loved spending time with his siblings and was often found playing football with the nieces and nephews.   He also liked to spend time outdoors, ricing, fishing, and hunting.

Gary is survived by one brother, David of Detroit Lakes; four sisters: Pam Bellcourt, Linda (Barry) Hjelsand, Wanda Greene, and Marilyn Erickson, all of Detroit Lakes; and many nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members.

He was preceded in death by his parents; siblings: Irene, Debbie, John, and Andy; and one nephew, Cordell Jr.
