Obituary

Garfield H. Bueng, age 93, of Twin Valley, MN, died Tuesday, August 29, 2017 at the Twin Valley Living Center. Garfield was born on August 14, 1924 to George and Anna (Olson) Bueng in Twin Valley. He was raised in Twin Valley where he attended elementary and graduated high school. Garfield moved to Seattle, Washington after high school for a brief amount of time to work on the ship yards. After returning to Twin Valley, he joined the Army where he served in the Philippines in clerical work. During his time in the Army, Garfield was awarded the Asiatic Pacific Campaign Medal, the World War II Victory Medal, and the Philippine Independence Medal. After his honorable discharge from the Army, Garfield returned to Twin Valley and married his soulmate Lily Hall on May 9, 1947 at the Zion Lutheran Church parsonage. The couple made their home south of Twin Valley until 1961, when they moved to town. Over the years, Garfield worked as a famer, a self-employed carpenter, and later an employee at Great Plains Lumber. For many years after retirement, Garfield spent his time doing construction projects on his own, mowing lawns, and saw sharpening. Garfield was well known in the community for his contagious smile and big heart. He enjoyed spending his time gardening, golfing, bowling, and fishing. Garfield was the dedicated sexton and caretaker of both the Zion Lutheran Cemetery and the West Wild Rice Cemetery. He dutifully cared for the cemeteries as well as the Zion Lutheran Church grounds for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Zion Lutheran Church serving as financial secretary and treasurer for many years. He was a lifetime member of the Lions Club and VFW Post #3818; as well as an active life member in the American Legion Post #431. He spent many hours volunteering with the Legion, and conversing with the locals. Garfield is survived by two sons, Leslie (Mara), Audubon, MN, and Conrad, Moorhead, MN; his daughter, Pam (Joe Kaiser) Bueng, Mahnomen, MN; eight grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Marlys Voss, Hawley, MN, and Clarissa "Dolly" (Terry) Meyer, Hankinson, ND; and four brothers, Arnold "Bud" (Julia), Dilworth, MN, Dennis (Fran), Twin Valley, Harlan (Sylvia), Twin Valley, and Bruce (Geraldine), Valley City, ND. He is preceded in death by his wife, Lily; three brothers, Curtis, Parnell, and George Jr; one sister, Clarice; and one daughter-in-law, Karen. Funeral Services will be held at 11:00 am on Wednesday, September 6, 2017 at Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. Visitation will be held from 5:00pm until 7:00pm at the Anderson Family Funeral Home in Twin Valley, on Tuesday, September 5, 2017. Visitation will also be one hour before the funeral at the church on Wednesday. Interment will be at the Zion Lutheran Cemetery following the funeral service with full military honors.
