Fred Morgan
Jr.
Jul 8, 1937 — Mar 10, 2021
Mahnomen
Fred Morgan Jr., age 83, of Naytahwaush, MN, died Wednesday, March 10, 2021, at the Mahnomen Health Center.
Fred Herman Morgan Jr. was born July 8, 1937, in White Earth, MN, to Fred and Philomene (Stanley) Morgan. Growing up, he attended school in Pipestone, MN, and later Flandreau Boarding School in South Dakota. As a young man, Fred entered the United States Army as served as a paratrooper. Following his honorable discharge in 1956, Fred returned to Minnesota to make his home and he was blessed with a daughter, Ellen.
Fred was a jack-of-all trades and over the years, much of his time was spent as a proud activist with the American Indian Movement (AIM). He had a vital role in the take over when they occupied Alcatraz and later at Wounded Knee. Fred, along with his lifelong friend, Dennis Banks, were founding members of Sacred Run. Together they traveled and participated in runs all over the world. Fred was also known to "ride the rails". He would often fill a backpack and hop a freight train and travel up and down the west coast and across the southern states by railway. Fred's time later in life would be lived out on the White Earth Reservation until his death. He will be remembered as a caring individual who would help anyone. Fred enjoyed visiting with friends and family, going to the casino and in his younger years, he was an accomplished boxer. He will be greatly missed by many.
Fred is survived by a daughter, Ellen (Terry) Leu of Mahnomen; five grandchildren; 21 great-grandchildren and many extended family. He was preceded in death by his parents and one sister and brother-in-law, Ruby and Gene Brisbois.
