Frank Matejcek, age 93, of Waubun, MN, died on Monday, August 10, 2015, at the Mahnomen Heath Center in Mahnomen, MN.
Frank John Matejcek was born May 26, 1922, the son of Frank and Anna (Spinler) Matejcek in Lake Grove Township, Waubun, MN. He attended Espe Grade School and graduated from Waubun High School with the class of 1940. In the fall of 1942, Frank enlisted in the US Army. He proudly served during WWII and was wounded in action in Germany, spending two months in the hospital in France. Frank was awarded a purple heart and received an honorable discharge. He returned home in the spring of 1946.
After returning home to Waubun, Frank returned to the family farm. Frank truly loved the land and held farming close to his heart. He operated the farm for many years until selling the land to his neighbors, Dale and Donna Spaeth who over the years have become family. During his retirement years, he enjoyed planting and tending to his garden. He and Ann loved to put puzzles together during the winter. He was a lifelong member of St. Ann's Catholic Church where he served many years as an usher and lector. Frank also held a membership with the Knights of Columbus.
Frank is survived by his sister, Anna Matejcek of Waubun; his nephews, Dennis (Jo) Johnson and David (Bev) Johnson all from Crookston; his nieces, Caroline (Tom) Payne of Mesa, AZ, and Linda Gregg of Minneapolis, MN and adopted family, Dale, Donna, Daleah and Denny Spaeth. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Joseph and Vincent; and sisters: Martha, Agnes and Mary.
Mass of Christian Burial was held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, August 15, 2015, at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun. Visitation was held one hour prior to the funeral at the church.
Burial was in the St. Ann's Catholic Cemetery, Waubun.
