Floyd W. Hovland, 91, Ada, Minnesota, died Sunday, August 28, 2016, at Halstad Living Center Halstad, MN.
Floyd William Hovland was born August 23, 1925, in Anthony Township in Norman County, MN to Adolph and Zella (DeWitt) Hovland. He was baptized and confirmed at First Lutheran Church in Ada, MN. He graduated from Ada High School in 1943. Floyd joined the US Navy at the age of 17 and served on a destroyer in the South Pacific during WWII. He was honorably discharged in 1946 and returned to Ada. He worked for Great Northern Railroad until 1948 and then joined the Ada Post Office.
Floyd met Harriet Johnson at the Norman County Fair in 1949. They were united in marriage on June 12, 1950 in Detroit Lakes, MN. He was recalled to the Navy in 1951, during the Korean Conflict. He served aboard a training ship stationed at the New Orleans Naval Base. Floyd returned to Ada after being honorably discharged and worked at the Ada Post Office until 1971. He also served as Officer in Charge at both the Ada and Fertile Post Office until being appointed Postmaster in Gary, MN in 1972. He retired in 1982.
Floyd served the community in many ways. He was active in the Ada VFW and American Legion Posts serving as Commander at local and district levels. He held State and National offices in the VFW as well. He served on the Board of Trustees for Grace Lutheran Church, was a City Councilman for over 10 years and also served on the board of the Northwest Regional Development Commission, Ada Municipal Hospital, and Dekko Community Center. He was on the Ada Volunteer Fire Department for 22 years, serving as fire chief. Floyd worked as a RSVP volunteer, dispatcher/jailer at the Norman County Law Enforcement Center and did lawn care until 5 years ago.
In Floyd's "spare' time he bowled and golfed on leagues. He enjoyed fishing, hunting, and playing cards with friends. He umpired baseball and refereed basketball. He was also an avid Red Hawks fan. Floyd loved to serve. He served his country, community and his family and friends. We have lost a good man on earth but heaven gained a treasure!
Floyd is survived by his wife, Harriet, his daughter, Linda (Shannon) Gilbertson, Thief River Falls, step grandson, Logan Gilbertson, Thief River Falls, MN, brothers: Dwight (Aurora), Anchorage, AK, Keith Wimbledon, ND, and Wayne, Grand Island, NE; one sister, Jeanette "Jan" Shaw, Ada, MN, one brother-in-law, Raymond Bitker, Ada; one sister-in-law, Barbara Johnson, Eagan, MN, many nephews and nieces, and his beloved cat, "Pumpkin". He was preceded in death by his parents, a brother, Lynn, two sisters, Vera Bitker and Naomi Aanenson, three brothers-in-law Glen Shaw, George Lundberg, and Lowell Johnson, and two sisters-in-law, Wanda Hovland and Helen Lundberg.
Funeral: 11:00AM, Thursday, September 1, 2016, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, MN.
Visitation: One hour before the service at the church.
Interment: Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.
