Watch Fern's Funeral Service

Fern Andersen, age 102, of Moorhead, MN, formerly of Ulen, MN, passed away on Wednesday, October 16, 2024, at Eventide Nursing Home, surrounded by her loving family.

Fern was born on October 4, 1922, on her family's farm northwest of Gary, MN, to Martin and Freida Ellson. She grew up with her siblings: Lawrence, Gladys, Floyd, Clifton, Lucille, and Bessie, and graduated from high school in Ada, MN. On December 31, 1939, Fern was united in marriage to Art Andersen Jr. on the family farm, and together they moved to Lockhart, MN, before settling in Ulen. They were blessed with the birth of their only son, James Martin Andersen, in 1940.

Fern was a pioneer for working women, as she worked in the business industry when most women yet did not. She worked side-by-side with her husband, father-in-law, and son, contributing to the success of the family business of Northwestern State Bank in Ulen. She also owned and operated her own income tax business. Fern's career spanned many years, showcasing her dedication and expertise in banking and finance, which she continued until her retirement, at the age of 80.

After Art's passing, Fern continued to live in Ulen until 2015, when she moved to Eventide in Moorhead. A lover of music, she sang in an award-winning quartet and was a talented pianist and organist. Fern was very lucky and had a knack for games of chance, enjoying bingo, cards, and trips to the casino. She also excelled in sports and was part of a bowling league and often played golf.  Fern especially loved to dance, and delighted in her weekly trips to Barnesville, MN, for their Saturday night polka parties. Fern's vibrant spirit and love for life will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

Fern was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Art Andersen Jr.; her brothers and sisters; and her grandson, AJ Andersen III. She is survived by her son, James Andersen and his wife, LaValle; her granddaughter, Elizabeth; her great grandchildren: Isabella, James, and Alexander; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 24, 2024, at 11:00 am at Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Ulen, with visitation one hour before at the church.  A time of gathering will be held on Wednesday, October 23, 2024, from 5:00 pm – 7:00 pm, in the Community Room at Eventide – the Linden, in Moorhead.
