Obituary

Evelyn Hamre, age 92, of Twin Valley, Minnesota, died Monday, March 2, 2009, in the Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley.

Evelyn Dokken was born October 31, 1916, on a farm in rural Spring Creek Township, near Lockhart, Minnesota, to Alfred and Blanch (Graves) Dokken. Growing up, Evelyn attended school in Ada, Minnesota, graduating with the class of 1936. Following high school, she went to Normal School in Ada and received her teaching certificate. Evelyn taught in Norman County country schools for a few years. On October 14, 1938, Evelyn was united in marriage to Lars Hamre in Ada. The couple lived on several farms in Norman County before purchasing a farm in eastern Norman County where they made their home for the next 40 years. While living on the farm, in later years, Evelyn was employed as a home health care worker. In 1984, Lars and Evelyn moved into their house in Twin Valley. They moved into the Normandy Apartments in the fall of 1999. Evelyn became a resident of the Twin Valley Living Center in June of 2002, where she continued to live until the time of her death.

Over the years, Evelyn kept busy with many different tasks. She enjoyed gardening, tending to her flowers, baking and cooking, as well as she volunteering with meals on wheels. As an active member of First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen and later of Zion Lutheran Church in Twin Valley, Evelyn participated in many church functions. She was active in the ladies aid and circle where she enjoyed doing quilting. She was also a member of the Twin Valley Garden Club over the years.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 70 years, Lars Hamre of Twin Valley, MN; a daughter, Ramona (Dr. Larry) Halvorson of Grand Forks, ND; sons, Lamont (Kathy) Hamre of Clive, IA and Dr. Merlin (Jenny) Hamre of Anchorage, AK; sister, Ila Gast of Eugene, OR; three sisters-in-law, Lela Dokken of Beltrami, MN, Catherine Dokken of Moorhead, MN, and Lois Dokken of Fosston, MN; nine grandchildren, four great-grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her parents, two sisters and four brothers.

Funeral Services was held on Saturday, March 7, 2009, at 10:30 AM in Zion Lutheran Church, Twin Valley. Officiating were Pastor Charles Bade with Danette Gwin serving as organist and Karen Bergstrom serving as vocalist. Pallbearers were Adam Halvorson, John Halvorson, James Halvorson, Katie Halvorson, Craig Dokken and Douglas Dokken. Honorary pallbearers were Jeffrey Hamre, Michael Hamre, Lars Hamre, Celeste Hamre, Britta Hamre and Bruce Dokken.

Burial was in the Riverside Cemetery, Mahnomen, Minnesota.
