Evelyn Carpenter, age 84, of Ada, MN, died Wednesday, July 26, 2017, at Bridges Care Community in Ada, MN.
Evelyn, the daughter of Clifford and Margaret (Waggoner) Didas, was born on December 8, 1932 in Hornell, NY. She spent her childhood in New York where she attended school. As a young woman, Evelyn was united in marriage to Lenard Abercrombie. The couple moved to Oregon to make their home and was blessed with six children: Dianna, Deborah, David, Daniel, Tom, and Sharon. As a busy mother, Evelyn worked as a waitress for a while, but was able to spend most of her time at home raising her children. Following a divorce, Evelyn married Grant Hamlin and welcomed a daughter, Brenda, to the world. Over her working years, Evelyn provided home health care, sold Avon, and worked at several restaurants. In an effort to amend the family, Evelyn and Lenard later remarried but they parted ways after a short time. In 1972, Evelyn moved back to Minnesota, living many years in the Detroit Lakes and Lake Park areas, as well as Gary, MN. She was well known at the local café in Lake Park in which she owned and operated. In the late 1980's, Evelyn moved to Florida where she rekindled a relationship with her high school sweetheart, Elbert "Pat" Carpenter. The couple married and returned to Oregon to make their home. Two years ago, Evelyn returned to Minnesota to be cared for by her daughters, and has made her home at Bridges Care Community.
Evelyn enjoyed playing Bingo and spent many hours completing word search puzzles. In her younger years, she liked to dance and often bowled. She was a member of her bowling league for many years.
