Ethel Hanson, age 91, of Mahnomen, MN, died on Saturday, August 25, 2018, at the Mahnomen Health Center Hospital under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.

Ethel Irene was born March 10, 1927, in Veblen, SD, the daughter of Bennie and Lillian (Olson) Aadland.  Her father died when Ethel was very young and she was raised by her mom and step-father, Kenneth Grimsrud.  Kenneth was a teacher and the family made their home in several different communities before they came to Mahnomen when Ethel was in high school.  She graduated from Mahnomen High School with the class of 1946.  Ethel was united in marriage to Leslie Hanson in East Grand Forks, MN, and they made their home in Mahnomen.  They were blessed with six children: Ann, Carol, Howard, Marilyn, Linda and Harley.  While Les worked in the bank, Ethel remained busy at home with their children.

Over the years, Ethel enjoyed many summers at their lake cabin, cross stitching, playing cards, especially Bridge and of course, golfing.  Ethel took up golfing only after her children were born and she was a natural.  She loved spending time on the golf course.  She was on the Tuesday night women's league and the women would take turns bringing supper each Tuesday.  Ethel's favorite meal to make and share was Chow Mein.  She also spent many hours baking, from when the kids were younger to baking bars, caramel rolls, and treats to take to the bank after the kids left home.

Ethel was a loyal Mahnomen Indians fan, following all the sporting events, even after her children graduated.  She was an active member of First Lutheran Church, the Red Hat Society and the Mahnomen Auxiliary.  She will be greatly missed by many.

Ethel is survived by four daughters: Ann (Ron) Oliveri of Denison, TX, Carol (Ken) Pierce of West Fargo, ND, Marilyn (Rick) Kaiser, and Linda (John) Simon both of Mahnomen; 11 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandson; two brothers, LuVerne (JoAnn) Grimsrud of Sun City, AZ, and Charles (Penny) Grimsrud of Wayzata, MN; one sister, Beverly (Lloyd) Correll of Moorhead, MN; and several niece and nephews.   She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Les; two sons, Howard and Harley; one great-grandson, Thomas Oliveri and one brother Marvin Aadland.  Blessed be the memory of Ethel Hanson.

Funeral Services will be held on Thursday, August 30, 2018, at 11:00 am at the First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen, MN.  Visitation will be held one-hour prior to the service at the church.  Burial will be held in Riverside Memorial Park Cemetery, Mahnomen.
