Erling Holm, age 82, of Mahnomen, MN, died Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at MeritCare Health Systems in Fargo, ND.
Erling Alfred Holm was born July 11, 1927 in Ada, Minnesota, the only son of Edwin and Anna (Haugen) Holm. Growing up, he went to country school and later attended high school in Ada. Following his schooling, Erling worked for the railroad and also helped his dad and area neighbors on the farm. In October of 1945, Erling enlisted with the United States Army, serving during WWII. He was honorably discharged in July of 1947.
Erling came back to the Ada area and worked for the REA for a couple years before moving to the Iron Range of Minnesota. On June 24, 1950 Erling was united marriage to Lila Greene in Grand Rapids, Minnesota. Together, the couple made their home in Coleraine, Minnesota, for 50+ years where Erling worked as an electrician in the mines. After his retirement, they moved back to Mahnomen in 2002. Erling died Wednesday, September 30, 2009 at MeritCare Health Systems in Fargo, North Dakota, at the age of 82. Lila continues to reside in Mahnomen.
Erling enjoyed fishing, camping, and gardening but also took time for reading and playing cards. He was known by many to tinker around the house, garage, or with the car, always something to keep him busy. Erling was also a lifetime charter member of the Eagles Club in Grand Rapids.
Surviving him is his wife, Lila, of Mahnomen, MN; three sisters: Mildred McNamar, of Moorhead, MN, Lillian Thompson, of Ada, MN, and JoAnne Evans, of Helena, MT; and several nieces and nephews. Erling was preceded in death by his parents.
A memorial service was held Monday, October 5, 2009 at 2 pm at Anderson~Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen.
