Obituary

Emelyn Sophie Fevig, age 89 of Ulen, MN passed away peacefully September 19, 2026 at Viking Manor Nursing Home with family by her side.

Emelyn Westby was born on September 20, 1936, to Robert & Sylvia Westby, on the farm she grew up on, in Walworth Township, northeast of Ulen. Emelyn attended District 54 Country School house until it closed, beginning 3rd grade in Ulen. It was there she learned to play the saxophone and was active in band and choir. As an only child, Emelyn was her dad’s right hand, picking and cleaning eggs, driving tractors and hauling grain. She was crowned Dairy Princess for Becker County in Detroit Lakes in 1953. In 1954 she graduated from high school and started work in the office of JC Penney in Detroit Lakes. On November 24, 1955, Emelyn married David Fevig at Aspelund Lutheran Church, Flom, MN. They made their home in Eveleth, MN while David worked for Foley Construction in Aurora as a truck driver. It was here that their first son, Dwight, was born in Virginia, MN in 1957. They moved back to Ulen, where David and Carl Herzog partnered to purchase the Ulen Standard business from Arnold Mellum. In 1960 David and Emelyn purchased the bulk oil business from Walter Lokken. It was the same year their daughter, Ellen, was born. Their son, Doyle, followed in 1964.

Besides raising their three children, Emelyn tended to the bookkeeping duties of Fevig Oil. Each year at their business open house, she made dozens of fresh donuts. Emelyn had been involved in her church and had an active role there, as her faith was always important to her. She served on the Rescue Squad in Ulen for 22 years and donated more than 11 gallons of blood over the years. She truly had a servant’s heart. Emelyn always had a gift of hospitality, where the coffee pot and fresh baking was ready to be enjoyed. She is extremely organized but always had time for a good visit. The family table in her kitchen always had room for one more. When David became ill, they sold their business to their son Doyle and wife, Wendy. David passed away on January 8, 1996, the same day their grandson, Alex was born.

Emelyn stayed in their family home, doing much of what she enjoyed, tending to her flowers, baking, reading, and doing her jigsaw puzzles. She sold her home to her granddaughter, Jessica Zillmer, and moved into the Park View Haven apartment in Ulen in 2015. In 2018, Emelyn moved into the Viking Manor Nursing Home, where she has been living and lovingly cared for since.

Emelyn is survived by her children: Dwight (MaryBeth) of Waukee, IA, Ellen (Greg) Zillmer of Ulen, MN, and Doyle (Wendy) of Fredericksburg, TX; her ten grandchildren: Jason (Grethel) Fevig, Joshua Fevig, Jenna (Scott) Torgerson, Jessica Zillmer, Megan (Ben) Schmitke, Alex (Adriana) Fevig, Jordan (Levi) Berntson, Josie Fevig, Faith Fevig, and Amos Fevig; and 14 great-grandchildren; as well as several nieces, nephews, cousins and dear friends who will miss her so very much. She is preceded in death by her husband, David, her parents, Sylvia and Robert Westby, and great-grandsons, Boaz and Malachi Berntson.

Funeral Services will be held at 10:00 am on Saturday, September 26, 2026, at Maranatha Free Lutheran Church in Ulen. Visitation will be held one hour before the funeral at the church. Burial will be in North Bethlehem Cemetery, Ulen.
