Elsie Walz, age 99, of Mahnomen, MN died Thursday, August 26, 2010 at the Mahnomen Health Center Nursing Home under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Elsie Madeline was born May 21, 1911 to Henry and Theresa (Schultz) Daniel in Padua, MN. At the young age of 7, she moved with her family to Mahnomen. She grew up and attended Daniel Country School near Beaulieu, MN. As a young lady, Elsie worked for area families doing housework. On May 23, 1939 she was united in marriage to Elmer Walz at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu. The couple made their home and farmed east of Mahnomen until 1963 when they moved into Mahnomen. Over the next several years, Elsie worked at Midtown Motel, Mahnomen Hospital and also did babysitting. Elmer and Elsie lived in Valley View Apartments in Mahnomen before moving to the nursing home in 2002. Elmer died on June 12, 2004 and Elsie continued to make her home in the nursing home until her death.
Elsie was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church, Christian Mothers of Beaulieu and after moving to Mahnomen she became a long time member of St. Michael's Catholic Church and Catholic Daughters of the Americas Court St. Justin 2020. She was also an active member of the Homemakers Club and kept busy with baking, canning, and tending to her flower gardens. In her free time, Elsie enjoyed embroidery, crocheting, and making quilts, many of which Elmer helped her with.
Elsie is survived by one daughter, Patricia (Darrell) Hansen of Bellevue, NE; two sons, Wayne "Bud" (Lauretta) Walz of Mahnomen, and Gene (Linda) Walz of Audubon, MN; eight grandchildren; 17 great-grandchildren; three great-great-grandchildren; one brother-in-law, Cyril (Ruth) of Vancouver, WA; two sisters-in-law, Priscilla Vendola of Lyndhurst, NJ and Frances Daniel of Mahnomen and many nieces and nephews. She is preceded in death by her parents; husband, Elmer; one granddaughter, Sheri Walz and one great-grandson, Nicholas Rynders.
Mass of Christian Burial was held Monday, August 30, 2010 at 10:30 a.m. at St. Michael's Catholic Church in Mahnomen. Visitation was be held Sunday, August 29th from 4-6 pm with a Prayer Service and Rosary at 5:30 pm at the Anderson~Mattson Funeral Home in Mahnomen. Visitation was held one hour prior to mass on Monday at the church. Burial was in the St. Michael's Catholic Cemetery, Mahnomen.
