Ella Maltrud, 97, Rindal, MN, died on Monday, December 20, 2010, at Pioneer Memorial Care Center, Erskine, MN.
Ella Marie (Turnbom) Maltrud and her twin brother Elmer Martin, were born on January 10, 1913, to Alfred and Ida (Fengestad) Turnbom, at their home in Garden Township, near Rindal, MN. Ella was baptized and confirmed at Faaberg Lutheran Church, Rindal. She grew up on the family farm and attended Riverside Rural School District #100. In 1927, Ella enrolled at Fertile High School, graduating in 1932, as salutatorian of her class. Following graduation, she worked with her father at the Rindal Meat Market and Coffee Shop for several years.
Ella was united in marriage to Clarence Maltrud in April of 1944, at the Faaberg Lutheran Church parsonage, Rindal. Clarence rebuilt his Model A Ford, put four new tires on it and together they drove to Seattle, WA, to work at Boeings in the defense plant. About two years later, the Model A Ford brought them back to Rindal. They bought a small farm north of Rindal and together remodeled their home, making it cozy. In the early 1960's, they managed the Rindal Co-op Store. They lived here for many years.
Ella and Clarence were active members of Faaberg Lutheran Church, where Ella was involved with ladies aid, circle and quilting. Ella had many hobbies, but she excelled at woodworking. She built ornate objects and toys, as well as practical pieces to use around the house. Ella loved animals of all kinds, especially dogs, cats, and birds.
Clarence passed away and Ella continued to live on the farm until moving to the Northwest Apartments in 1996 in Fertile. She entered the Fair Meadow Nursing Home, Fertile, in December of 2004, moving to Pioneer Memorial Care Center in 2009.
