Obituary

Elaine Heiberg, age 88, of Frederick, Maryland, formerly Twin Valley, Minnesota, died October 29, 2007, in Frederick. Funeral Services were held on Sunday, November 4, 2007, at Evangelical Lutheran Church, Frederick.

Elaine was born on April 18, 1919, in a log house in Heiberg, the daughter of Andreas and Gerda (Olson) Heiberg. Elaine graduated from Twin Valley High School with the class of 1936. She continued her education at the University of Minnesota, graduating in 1940 with a degree in clothing and textiles in business.

Elaine moved to Washington, D.C., in 1942, to work on the war effort. She then spent 10 years as a civilian with the US Government in post-war Germany. She returned to the United States in 1957, where she was a personnel officer at St. Elizabeth's Hospital, Washington, D.C., until her retirement. Elaine lived the last 27 years in Frederick, Maryland. She was an enthusiastic supporter of local arts, peace initiatives and other community cultural affairs in Frederick. She was president of the Historical Society of Frederick County, and was on the Frederick Arts Council, Weinberg Center for the Arts, Baltimore Symphony Orchestra in Frederick and the Peace resource Center boards. She was a prime mover in founding the Delaplaine visual Arts Center. Other organizations in which she was actively involved included the Frederick Camerata, Great Decisions and Women in Black. She was very proud of her Norwegian heritage, and Minnesota upbringing right near the Heiberg Dam on the Wild Rice River, which her grandfather operated.

Surviviors include one brother, Harold (Eva) Heiberg; step-mother, Gladys (Nysetvold) Heiberg; half-sisters, Mary (Terrance) Larson; Margaret (Max Melius) Wycisk; half-brother, James (Barbara) Heiberg; and aunt Ann Heiberg Houghton.

She was preceded in death by one brother, Lt. Lowell Heiberg in 1944; and one half-brother Owen Heiberg in 2004.

A Graveside Service was held on Saturday, March 22nd, at 11:00 AM in the Zion Lutheran Cemetery, Twin Valley, Minnesota.
