Watch Ed's Funeral Service

Edwin Henry Scherping passed away on Saturday, April 15, 2023 at Sanford Hospice House in Fargo, ND, with family around him.

Ed was born July 9, 1933, in New Munich, Minnesota, to Joseph and Veronica (Rau) Scherping.  In 1940, at the age of 7, he moved with his family from the Freeport area to a farm in Popple Grove Township, Waubun, Minnesota.

After his schooling, he began farming with his father.  In 1955, Ed was drafted into the US Navy and proudly served aboard the USS Sperry, a submarine tender.  Upon his honorable discharge, he returned home and resumed his farming career.

At a New Year's Eve dance in 1958, Ed met his future wife, Barbara Modey, at where else but the Rancho.  They were united in marriage on December 28, 1963 at St. Benedict's Catholic Church in White Earth, Minnesota. They continued to make their home on the farm and raised their four children there:  Dan, Mark, James and Susan.

Farming was his passion.  Ed's pet peeve was having crooked rows in a field.  He was still anticipating planting the 2023 crop, and the family has definite instructions to plant that crop!  When his mobility became more difficult the last couple years, his favorite pastime was driving his John Deere Gator around the neighborhood, checking out the fields and crops and stopping to visit the neighbors.

Ed was a member of St. Ann's Catholic Church, Waubun, the Mahnomen Council of Knights of Columbus, and a former member of WAMO and the Rising Sun FU Local.

Spending time at the family cabin on South Twin brought him his biggest joy.  Ed loved knowing the grandchildren were building memories for years to come and he was grateful he could do that for them. He liked the simple things at the cabin: fried fish and a half can of beer.

Ed's greatest legacy is one of hard work, honesty and being a man of his word.  His granddaughter, Stephanie, recently asked him what his motto for living was.  He said "Just be good".  That is how Ed lived his life, and it is how we will remember him.  He loved his children and grandchildren unconditionally and was so proud of them.

Ed is survived by his wife, Barb, of 59 years;  son, Dan of Hawley, Minnesota; son, Mark (Tonya), grandchildren: Talin and Katelyn of Maple Grove, Minnesota; son, James (Katherine), granddaughters: Stephanie, Brianna and Amanda of Grand Rapids, Minnesota; and daughter, Susan (Greg) Garmen, grandsons: Matt, Nick and Jack of Crookston, Minnesota.   Surviving is a sister, Yvonne Johnson of Fargo, North Dakota, and sister-in-law, Erna Scherping of Apple Valley, Minnesota.  Also surviving is brother and sister-in-law, James and Carol Modey of Hines, Oregon.

He was preceded in death by his parents; twin brother, Clarence; brother, Albin; sister-in-law, Marlene Scherping; brother-in-law, John W. Johnson; and brother and sister-in-law, Ed and Rose Modey.

Blessed be the memory of Edwin H. Scherping.
