Obituary

Edny M. Neuhalfen, age 95, of Mahnomen, MN, formerly of Detroit Lakes, MN, passed away Saturday, June 11, 2016, at Cornerstone Residence and Extended Care in Fosston, MN. The family extends great thanks to Cornerstone and Essentia Hospice for all their wonderful care.

Edny Maureen Williamson, the seventh child of Engle and Martha (Elliason) Williamson, was born July 6, 1920, on the family farm near Gary, MN. She grew up there and graduated country school after the 8th grade. As a young woman, she worked on the farm and also in Bonn's Café and Hotel in Twin Valley. Edny met and fell in love with Raymond "Babe" Neuhalfen and the couple was united in marriage on August 24, 1940. In 1942, Babe and Edny bought a farm in Norman County and were blessed with three children: Raymond, Carol, and Joanne. In addition to tending to their children, Edny worked alongside Babe on the farm. She was a large part of the family farming operation for more than 40 years. She milked cows, drove combine, fixed machinery and did many other farm chores, all without complaint. In 1967, they sold the farm in Gary and moved to Detroit Lakes, MN, where they continued to operate a smaller farm together. Over the years, the farm became a treasured memory for all her grandchildren as she was able to watch them as often as she could. Following Babe's death in 1986, Edny remained on the farm until 2010 when, at the age of 90, she moved into Valley View apartments in Mahnomen. She recently relocated to Cornerstone in Fosston.

Edny was a strong, hardworking, independent woman with a heart of gold. She was a mother, grandmother, great-grandmother and good friend to many people. To know her was to love her. Edny was never afraid to tackle a challenging project and was always willing to help others. She also enjoyed volunteering. Many hours were spent working for the Retired Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) in Detroit Lakes and cutting hair at Emmanuel Nursing Home. Edny was always prepared to drive friends and neighbors to appointments, a job she enjoyed until she was 90 years old.

She and Babe spent many hours ice fishing, deer hunting and snowmobiling. Edny was a great homemaker, known for her many homemade quilts and her crocheting of doilies and hangers. She was also a wonderful cook and baker, and each of the grandchildren knew Grandma made the best homemade breads and jams. Above all, her true love was her family. She never ever wanted to be a burden and loved when family came to visit.

Edny is survived by her children: Raymond (Lynda) Neuhalfen, Jr., of East Grand Forks, MN, Carol (Ilton, Jr.) Thorpe of Mahnomen, MN, and Joanne Miller of Decator, AL; seven grandchildren: Connie, Christie, Cory, Darin, Lawrence Jr., Blaine, and Deanna; and fourteen great-grandchildren and many nieces, nephews, and other relatives. She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Raymond, Sr., her son-in-law, Lawrence Miller Sr., a granddaughter, Darci Thorpe, two brothers and five sisters.

A memorial service was held at 11:00 am Monday, June 20, 2016, with a time of gathering one hour prior at First Lutheran Church, Mahnomen.  Inurnment took place at St. Petri Cemetery, rural Gary, MN.
