Edna Holum, age 81, of Twin Valley, MN, died Saturday, March 14, 2009 at the Twin Valley Living Center.
Edna was born September 24, 1927 in Mahnomen County, the daughter of Henry and Helen (Specht) Schroeder. Growing up, she attended Popple Grove Country School and graduated as the Valedictorian with the class of 1945 from Waubun High School. Following high school, Edna furthered her education at Moorhead State Teachers College, where she earned her teaching certificate. She taught 1st and 2nd grade in Hitterdal, MN, for two school years.
On June 19, 1949 Edna was united in marriage to Kenneth Holum at Wild Rice Lutheran Church, rural Twin Valley. The couple made their home on the farm where they raised their family and spent their entire married life. Edna's husband, Ken, of 58 years died on July 24, 2007 and she moved into the Twin Valley Living Center in November of 2007.
Over the years, Edna was a hard working woman who kept very busy. Not only did she help Ken on the farm with some of the day to day chores, she also prepared meals for the family and hired help, baked many loaves of bread, sewed for her children and many other routine tasks. Edna enjoyed her way of life on the farm and the many labors of love including cooking, baking, sewing, canning and pickling. Everyone knew she made the best rice krispie bars in the county and could hardly wait for an event where they would be served.
A long time member of Wild Rice Lutheran Church, Edna was very active in the church. She taught Sunday School and served with the ladies aid for many years. Edna enjoyed reading anything, a hobby which earned her the nickname "Bookmark". She also loved to work crossword puzzles and travel. She and Ken logged many many miles traveling to see family and friends and taking in some beautiful scenery along the way. Many are saddened with her loss, but she will remain in their hearts for years to come.
Edna leaves behind three sons: Wayne (Patti) Holum of Tempe, AZ, Curt Holum of Ogema, MN, and Dr. Doug (Barb) Holum of Mitchell, SD; two daughters, Gail (Jon) Tensfeldt of Sandy, UT and Joan (Jim) Lampkin of Leavenworth, KS; eight grandchildren; two great-grandchildren; one brother, Walter (JoAnne) Schroeder of Anaheim, CA; two sisters, Lillian (John) Brickzin of East Grand Forks, MN, and Ruth (Lloyd) Spielman of Twin Valley, MN; and a sister-in-law, Clara Michels of Fairbault, MN.
