Sep 5, 1922 — Aug 18, 2023
Mahnomen
Edith Stevens, age 100, of Mahnomen, MN, passed away peacefully on Friday, August 18, 2023, at her home, under the care of her family and Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Edith Verne Foster, born on September 5, 1922, to parents Daniel and Viola (Folstrom) Foster in Island Lake Township, MN, was one of fourteen siblings. Her early years were spent in rural Bejou, MN, before she attended the Mission School in White Earth, MN. After her schooling, Edith devoted herself to various jobs. On November 3, 1947, she married Raymond Stevens, and together with their cherished sons, they established their home on a farm in Shell Lake Township in Becker County. Edith was an integral part of farm life, tending to cows, hogs, chickens, and sheep. She was a hard worker and consistently held multiple jobs throughout her life.
During the 1950s, Edith began a noteworthy 30-year career at Swift-Eckrich Turkey Plant in Detroit Lakes, MN. After her "retirement" in the mid-1980s, she continued working various odd jobs, including washing dishes at the Red Apple Café in Mahnomen until she was an impressive 91 years old.
Edith faced the loss of her beloved husband, Ray, in 1995. Subsequently, she relocated to Mahnomen, where she resided until her passing. In 2022, the Stevens family joyfully celebrated Edith's 100th birthday, a testament to her enduring legacy.
Edith was a woman of boundless energy, continually finding purpose in work. Her hands were never idle, whether she was cooking, baking, or managing her household. Potatoes were a staple in every meal she prepared. Her heart swelled with love for her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and she delighted in babysitting them. Card games, particularly rummy, held a special place in her heart, and she often hosted lively card parties. In her leisure time, she tended a stunning garden, meticulously preserving its bounty through canning. She was a member of the VFW Post 1676 in Detroit Lakes, MN, and thoroughly enjoyed dancing, puzzles, and word searches.
Edith Verne Foster's vibrant spirit and tireless work ethic will forever be remembered by those who had the privilege of knowing her. May she rest in eternal peace, her legacy of love and unwavering dedication forever residing in our hearts.
Edith is survived by her sons, Dan (Beverly) Stevens and Claude Clayton "Butch" (Darlene) Stevens; grandchildren: Rae Ann Smith, Pamela (Bill) Chisholm, Scott (Tammy) Stevens, and Bradley Stevens; 12 great-grandchildren; 22 great-great grandchildren; sister, Dale Richmond; and many nieces and nephews. Edith was preceded in death by her husband, Raymond; son, Clyde Lemon; five brothers; and seven sisters.
A private family service will be held.
