Obituary

Earl Rogers, 92, Ulen, MN, formerly Mahnomen, MN, died Tuesday, December 1, 2015, at the Viking Manor Nursing Home in Ulen.

Earl J. Rogers, an identical twin, was born January 14, 1923, near Twin Valley, MN, to Otto and Milla (Fossen) Rogers. He was raised on the family farm east of Twin Valley and baptized and confirmed at Wild Rice Lutheran Church. Earl attended country school followed by Twin Valley High School where he graduated with the class 1942. While in high school, he was always active in sports and as a senior was part of an undefeated football team. Shortly after graduation, Earl entered the United States Army Air Corps during World War II. While in the military, he served in the Pacific Theater in a medical unit. After his honorable discharge in 1946, Earl returned to the Twin Valley community. On April 27, 1946, he was united in marriage to Loyal Slininger at the Wild Rice Lutheran Church. Earl worked construction for a few years before being employed by turkey farms in both Norman and Mahnomen County for 11 years. In 1959, he became the Standard Oil Agent in Mahnomen which he operated until the mid- 1980's. In addition to owning and operating the Standard Oil Bulk Business, Earl also drove school bus for the Mahnomen School District from the mid-1960's until the late1980's. Upon selling the business to his son in the mid-1980's, Loyal and Earl enjoyed summers at their home on South Twin Lake, east of Mahnomen, followed by winters in Arizona. In 2006, they moved to Ulen. Following Loyal's death in 2011, he moved to Northern Lights assisted living and for the past several months he has lived at the Viking Manor Nursing Home.

Earl held memberships with the Mahnomen American Legion Isaacson-Bjorge Post #31 and the Mahnomen Lions Club. He was also a member of First Lutheran Church in Mahnomen. Earl took a special interest in the The Boy Scouts of America, helping to organize a troop in Twin Valley. His persistence, hard work and leadership role earned him the Silver Beaver Award. He found great enjoyment spending time with his family, especially the children. Earl was a talented woodworker and all around handyman. He enjoyed going to auctions and visiting with his friends. One of his greatest joys came from sports. Whether an active participant, attending an event, or watching on television, any and all sports made up a large part of Earl's favorite pastimes.

He is survived by his daughter, Jeanine (Barry) Houglum, Ulen, MN; two sons, Dr. Jerry (Susan) Rogers, Moorhead, MN, and Dean (Kathy) Rogers, Detroit Lakes, MN; nine grandchildren, 18 great-grandchildren; his twin brother, Phil (Donna) Rogers, Waubun, MN, and two sisters, Mavis Wermager, Ulen, MN and Verla (LaVerne) Schoenborn, Mahnomen, MN.
