Duane Tilleraas, age 89, of Gary, MN, died on Sunday, September 26, 2021, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Duane Herbert, the son of John and Manda (Wermager) Tilleraas, was born June 27, 1932 at home on the farm near Gary, MN.  He was raised on the family farm and attended school.  Duane was baptized, confirmed, and remained a lifelong member of Gary Lutheran Church.  At 16 years old, he took over operation of the farm and caring for his family following the passing of his father, John.  He also continued his schooling, graduating with the class of 1950.  Duane often talked of his days waking up early to milk cows, going to school, doing chores, and milking again before nightfall.  He loved farming and truly enjoyed each aspect of the land.  He continued to care for his mother while farming, primarily raising corn and cattle.  On June 18, 1966, Duane was united in marriage to JoAnne Lee.  They have made their home on the farm together since that time.  About 5 years ago, Duane officially retired and rented his land to the Sather family.  In addition to farming, Duane loved being around people and his dogs.  They always had a puppy around the farm trailing along behind Duane.  Over the years, he served with many organizations, including the Lions Club, the Gary Ag board, and the Gary Lutheran Church Council.  In earlier years, they often went to dances all around the area.  He greatly enjoyed visiting with friends and neighbors any chance he could.  Duane even went to Bingo with JoAnne, simply to visit and have lunch.  He loved going out to eat.  Like clockwork, Duane and JoAnne went for morning coffee at the Northside Café where they shared many wonderful conversations with friends.  He also cherished family gatherings and quiet time watching his favorite television shows.  His stories and tender smile will be greatly missed.

He is survived by his wife, JoAnne of Gary; one sister-in-law, Dorothy Tilleraas of Great Falls, MT, several nieces and nephews, and many great nieces and nephews.  He was preceded in death by his parents, and five siblings: Palma (Harmen) Juelson, Clayton (Gladys) Tilleraas, Margaret (Cy) Dekko, Truman Tilleraas, and an infant sister, Lloyce; as well as many extended family members.

A Funeral Service will be held at 11:00 a.m. on Friday, October 1, 2021, at Gary Lutheran Church, Gary. A time of gathering will be held one hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be held in St. Petri Lutheran Cemetery, Gary.

Following all Covid-19 safety protocols, social distancing will be practiced, and all are strongly encouraged to wear a mask to keep families safe. The service will be recorded and posted here shortly following the service.
