Obituary

Duane "Smiley" Carl Malmskog, 84 of Ulen (Flom), MN died surrounded by family and friends June 12, 2017 at the Viking Manor Care Center in Ulen from complications of a stroke he had at the end of December 2016. "Smiley" as he was affectionately known by all who met him, was one of the most positive men God ever allowed to grace this earth. Anyone who knew Smiley, if even for a few minutes, learned quickly that he loved to talk and loved to laugh and joke. He started his journey born to Martin and Selma (Hegstad) Malmskog at the "Elijah Farm" in rural Becker County on March 23, 1933. He was one of nine children. His family moved from that farm near Ulen to the family homestead just south of Flom at the tender age of 6 months, where he stayed on the same farm for over 83 years. Smiley joked that his first 6 months moving that one time was the gypsy in him, but that now after 80 plus years the farm was now finally starting to feel like home. He graduated Ulen high school in 1951. Smiley attended Walworth Baptist church all his life, where he was a pillar at the church for decades serving on various church boards and being church sexton for many years. While growing up, Smiley helped his father on the farm and eventually went on to take over the farm and expand the operation known as "Malmskog Farms". After many adventures and some shenanigans as a young single man, Smiley met the love of his life Helen (Wermager) Lindberg in 1978 while at a bowling alley in Detroit Lakes, MN. It was laughs and fun from the first meeting. The couple was married on May 6, 1979, and Helen joined Smiley on the farm. During their marriage, they enjoyed their time on the farm, the stays of their nieces and nephews at the farm, participation in bowling leagues, being active in their church, and attending social events. Smiley loved farm life and his horses which he raised up until he was 82 years old. He had as many as 50 at one time, with a herd of 18 as late as 2015. He was very proud of a team that he raised and sold that ended up pulling the carriage for Coretta Scott King's funeral. The teams he sold were always known to be gentle horses, as Smiley had a way with horses much like he did with people. Smiley was a long time member of the Flom Lions, the Walworth Township Board, and a lifelong active DFL'r. He had a way about him that brought love, care, compassion, and laughter to life. Smiley's final move was to Viking Manor Assisted Living and Nursing Home in January 2017, where he received wonderful care. Being just a few miles from his farm, Smiley struck up new friendships and renewed many old friendships at the Viking Manor. Smiley expressed his true appreciation for the loving care the staff at Viking Manor gave him and his wife Helen. Smiley is survived by his wife of 37 years Helen, Ulen; two brothers: Gene (Rita), Akeley, MN, and Larry (Lois), Lake Park, MN; four sisters: Aida Jensen, Portland, OR, Verda Spickelmier, Portland, OR, Lorrayne Adams, Culver City, CA, and Shirley Zurn, Nevis, MN; countless nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, and two brothers: Oliver and Ernest. Funeral Services will be held at 2:00pm on Saturday, June 17, 2017 at Walworth Baptist Church, Ulen. Visitation will be held at the Anderson Family Funeral Home from 6:00pm until 8:00pm, with a prayer service beginning at 7:00pm on Friday, June 16, 2017. Visitation will also be one hour prior to the funeral service. Interment will be at the Walworth Cemetery following funeral services. The family asks that any memorials be made in the form of a charitable donation as family and friends wish.
