Duane Johnson, age 87, of Twin Valley, MN, died Wednesday, March 29, 2017, from injuries sustained in an automobile accident. Duane Lamarr Johnson was born February 16, 1930, in Erskine, MN, to Heino and Pearl Johnson. He grew up in Twin Valley where he graduated high school. Duane married Barbara Mishaw and the couple was blessed with four boys: Michael, Paul, Roger and Bruce. In 1951, he entered the United States Air Force and served until 1955. Following his honorable discharge, he moved to New Jersey and worked as a cab driver for a time. With experience from the military, Duane went to New York and applied with the FAA as an Air Traffic Controller. He was assigned to the Philly Tower and later transferred to NAFEC in Atlantic City, where he used his expertise as input for engineers to develop a computerized air traffic control system, arts1. He was responsible for certifying the installation nationwide. Duane lived in south Jersey for 20 years and worked as an air traffic controller for 33 years. retiring in 1985. Upon moving back to Fargo, ND, Duane crossed paths with his childhood neighbor girl, Elvira "Dolly" Erickson. They were united in marriage in Las Vegas, NV, in 1983. The couple lived in Fargo for a couple years until Duane's retirement in 1985 and then they settled back in their home town of Twin Valley. In his younger years, Duane was active with his boys' activities like playing baseball and Boy Scouts. As he aged, he preferred the less hectic pace of playing cards, going to Bible Study and traveling but remained enthusiastic about golf. Duane loved to golf, playing on some of the most famous courses in the United States. He helped with the Senior Tour and never turned down an offer to play a few holes. Duane was known to be a generous and caring individual who had lots of friends and family and enjoyed visiting with all of them. He was a member of Zion Lutheran Church and the American Legion. Duane is survived by his wife of 34 years, Dolly, of Twin Valley; two sons, Roger Johnson of Fargo and Bruce (Dee) Johnson of Runnemede, NJ; Dolly's children: Patrice (Bob) Donald of Grand Forks, ND, Kim (Dave) Jacobson of Red Wing, MN, and Valerie Cartier also of Grand Forks; 10 grandchildren; 14 great-grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren; two brothers, Sheldon "Butch" Johnson of Ada, MN, and Dennis (Donna) Johnson of Becker, MN. He was preceded in death by his parents, sons, Michael and Paul Johnson and siblings: Marilyn, Beverly, Keith and Shirley.
