Douglas Stalboerger, age 66, of Thief River Fall, MN, formerly Waubun, MN, died on Thursday, March 9, 2023, at Sanford Health in Fargo, ND.

Douglas Mark was born June 4, 1956, in Mahnomen, MN, the son of Donald and Julia (Young) Stalboerger. He attended school in Waubun, MN, and graduated with the Class of 1974. Following graduation, he lived at home until his mother died in 1975 and then he moved to Hanson's Group Home in Thief River Falls. Several years later, Doug moved to the Sunwood Home where he remained until his passing. Over the years, Doug worked at the Thief River Falls DAC and continued to do so until his health would not allow him to continue to work.

Doug participated in the Special Olympics for many years and enjoyed bowling and riding bike with his friends from the Sunwood Home. He never passed up a chance to eat at Pizza Hut or have a Snickers bar and a Mountain Dew, his favorite snack and drink.

Doug liked to listen to music and watch TV, but his real passion was watching the Minnesota Vikings, followed closely by being a Minnesota Twins fan. The Vikings were his favorite team and this was very apparent when you entered his room. The room was painted Vikings purple and the walls were covered with Viking signs and pennants. Doug also wore Viking and Twins apparel to show his loyalty to his two favorite teams. Some of his highlights were attending Twins games and a Vikings game.

Doug was an innocent and gentle person with just a hint of stubbornness. He was a man of strong faith and attended Mass on a regular basis. When he was younger, he sang in the church choir and brought up the offerings at Mass.

Doug was proceeded in death by his parents, Donald and Julia (Young) Stalboerger and a niece and nephew. He is survived by his siblings: Robert (Gretchen) Stalboerger of Callaway, MN, Cathy (Dennis) Erickson of Pelican Rapids, MN, Michelle (Jim) Nowak of St. Francis, WI, and Sheila (Dale) Erickson of Vergas, MN; and 12 nieces and nephews.

The family of Doug would like to extend a special thank you to his guardian, Sharon Grossman and to Allison and staff at the Sunwood Home in Thief River Falls for their caring and compassionate care of Doug over the many years they were associated with him.

A nephew summed up the passing of Doug by saying " If anyone ever deserved heaven, it was Doug".

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 am on Tuesday, April 11, 2023 at St. Ann's Catholic Church in Waubun. A Time of Gathering will be held one hour prior to the service at the church.
