Dorothy M. Walz, age 89, of Mahnomen, MN, died Saturday, June 2, 2012 at the Mahnomen Health Center Hospital under the care of Hospice of the Red River Valley.
Dorothy Mathilda Schouviller, the daughter of Adam and Anna (Koll) Schouviller, was born on October 11, 1922 at home in rural Mahnomen. She grew up on the family farm and attended country school. On a rainy September 16, 1941, Dorothy was united in marriage to Lanwald "Lindy" Walz in Beaulieu, MN, and due to the rain more people came to the dance than the wedding. The couple lived in rural Waubun for a few years after which time they moved to her family farm in Rosedale Township. Dorothy was an active farmwife working side-by-side with her husband while raising their children. Over the years, she also picked potatoes for Schermerhorn Farms and worked both as a nurse's aide and doing laundry at the Mahnomen Health Center. Dorothy and Lindy moved into an apartment in Mahnomen in 1992. Following Lindy's death in 1995, she continued to live in the apartment until making her home at Jefferson Estates.
Dorothy's hands were never idle and she enjoyed sewing, crocheting, playing cards and dancing. She had a large garden and canned her produce each year. Dorothy loved hats and jewelry, beautifully wearing the perfect accessories. She often dressed up in costumes for the different seasonal holidays always making those around her smile. In her later years, she also liked spending time at the Casino and playing Bingo. She was also a member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Most important in Dorothy's life was her family: she cherished each of them and especially doted over the little children. She will be sadly missed by all her family and friends.
She is survived by three daughters: Doris (Victor) Eiynck of Mahnomen, Deb Lunde of Mahnomen, and Sandra (Mark) Amberg of Waubun, MN; five sons: Lowell of Lake Park, MN, Richard (Rhonda) of Mahnomen, Randall of Panora, IA, Keith (Sarah) of Knoxville, IA, and Dale (Kristene) of Windsor Heights, IA; one sister, Della Steffl of Grand Forks, ND; 32 grandchildren, 62 great grandchildren, and five great-great grandchildren.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; one son, Kenneth; three brothers, Lawrence, Edwin, and Art; and four sisters, Marcella Wintheiser, Leona Paggen, Evelyn Thelen, and Gerry Roy.
