Dorothy Schaumburg, 87, Mahnomen, MN, died unexpectedly Tuesday, January 7, 2014, at her home.

Dorothy Lucille (Crandall) Schaumburg was born December 11, 1926, in Hutchinson, MN, daughter of Myron and Viola (Dunn) Crandall. As a young child, she attended the El Salem Country School in Nye County, WI. She graduated from Anoka High School in 1945 and attended Minneapolis Business College. During her high school and college days she worked as a waitress.

On November 20, 1946, she began a new phase of her life. She was united in marriage to John E Schaumburg in Detroit Lakes, MN, at the First Congregational Church with Rev. Myron Meckel officiating. As a young bride, and being a "city kid", she faced many new changes and challenges. Dorothy and John lived on their family dairy farm in Chief Township, near Mahnomen, for almost 36 years. As a homemaker, Dorothy raised seven children, sold Tupperware for 12 years, and began a career selling Avon. She was on the school board when many of the area 'country schools' were closed and students were bused to Mahnomen. In 1991, they sold the family farm and moved to Mahnomen. Dorothy continued selling Avon, learned how to golf and was on a bowling team.

Dorothy was active in her church, Bethlehem Lutheran, as president of the Mission Society. She attended weekly Bible studies, taught Thursday School, and served on the Lutheran Island Camp Board. She was president of the Mahnomen Community Center, past president and active member of the American Legion Auxiliary. Dorothy was a member of the Mahnomen Library Club, Pleasant Hour Homemakers, Birthday Club, two Bridge Clubs and was a "Red Hatter." In 2008, she received the Mahnomen Library Club Golden Deeds Award. Dorothy was also an active member of the Dacotah Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution, serving as state Chaplin for a number of years. She also spent many years tracing her Scot/Irish heritage back to 1623.

She was a kind, loving, and gracious person, setting a wonderful example for her children, grandchildren and great grandchildren. She will be deeply missed by all who knew her.

Dorothy is survived by six children – four sons: Richard (Elaine) Bemidji, MN, Rodney (Gwenn) Plymouth, MN, Mark (Jane) Thief River Falls, MN, Michael (Sandy) Bejou, MN, and two daughters, Pat (Jim) Todahl, Fertile, MN, and Susan (Ron) Thorsrud, Twin Valley, MN; 22 grandchildren: Jonathan, Eileen, Benjamin, Jessica, Patrick, Alanna, Andrew, Melissa, Jennifer, Timothy, Amanda, Courtney, Wayne, Nathan, Mary Jo, Tyler, Gregg, Luke, Mathew, Samantha, Tony, Calvin; 18 great-grandchildren; daughters-in-law, Suzanne Schaumburg, Grand Forks, ND, and Laura Schaumburg, Burnsville MN; sister, Mary Ann (Clyde) Wright, Cumberland WI; brothers, Jim Crandall, Pensacola, FL, and John Crandall, Wadena, MN; sister-in-law, Martha Schaumburg, Mahnomen, MN; and brother-in-law, Frank Murphy, Mound, MN.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Myron Crandall and Viola (Crandall) Barton; step-father, Henry Barton; her husband, John; John's parents, Ralph and Minnie (Thram) Schaumburg; son, Dale; son-in-law, Allan Matson; sisters, Muriel Pomeroy and Charlotte Murphy; sister-in-law, Dorothy Mae Crandall; brother-in-law, Melvin Schaumburg; and granddaughter, JoAnn Marie Schaumburg.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 11, 2014, at 2:00 p.m. at Bethlehem Lutheran Church, in Mahnomen.

Visitation will be Friday, January 10, 2014, from 5:00 to 7:00 p.m. with a prayer service at 6:30 p.m. at the Anderson Family Funeral Home, Mahnomen.

Interment will be held at First Lutheran Cemetery, Mahnomen.
