Dorothy Moen, age 91, of Gary, MN, died Wednesday, May 13, 2015, in Twin Valley Living Center, Twin Valley, MN.
Dorothy May Monson was born November 6, 1923, the daughter of Arthur and Anna (Billet) Monson in Fingal, ND, where she grew up and attended school. Dorothy graduated from Fingal High School as Valedictorian of her class. She furthered her education at Valley City State University receiving a teaching degree. Dorothy taught school in Washburn and Dazey, ND, before moving to Gary to teach. While living in Gary she lived with Edna Narum. Dorothy met the love of her life, Sanford, at Sanford's father and Edna's wedding. It must have been love at first sight, because they were married three short months later, on July 22, 1951! The couple made their home on a farm east of Gary. Dorothy was very involved on the farm with Sanford and also was a substitute teacher in Gary for many years. The couple moved into Gary in 1998 and retired from farming in 2000. Dorothy lived there until entering the Twin Valley Living Center a few months ago due to deteriorating health.
Dorothy's favorite pastimes included playing cards, doing ceramics, as well as being an avid reader. She enjoyed cooking and baking and will be remembered for her delicious cinnamon bread and her scalloped potatoes. She was a former member of St. Petri Lutheran Church and was active in the WELCA Conference Board and the ladies groups there. Over the years, Dorothy was also active on the LARL Library Board.
Dorothy is survived by her husband of 63 years, Sanford, of Gary, MN; a son, Peter of Gary, MN; a daughter Pati (William) Crowley of Columbus, OH; four grandchildren: Jordyn and Makensie Crowley, Griffin Crowley and Gabriel Kunerth; two great-grandchildren, Gavin and Phoebe Kunerth and a sister, Hazel Healy of CA.
