Doris Ione Schmidt, Ada, MN, was called home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, February 13, 2019, at Benedictine Care Community in Ada. She lived to be 96 wonderful years.
Doris was born on November 19, 1922, southeast of Perley, MN, to Alex and Lucy (Mell) Baker. She was baptized on November 30, 1922, at Bethania Lutheran Church of rural Perley. She was the oldest of four siblings: Kenneth, Leo and Ronald Baker. After moving closer to Ada, Doris was confirmed at First Lutheran Church by Pastor Jacobson and she attended school in Ada. She graduated from Ada High School in the class of 1941, and began her career working in the Ada area. She worked at the Ada Bakery and Oscar Bang and Co., a grocery and meat market. Throughout her youth, Doris was active in 4-H being a founding member of the Hegne Hustlers club.
On September 24, 1944, Doris married Bennie Schmidt and they made their home in Ada. Doris continued working for Northern Propane Gas Co., Peoples Natural Gas, Standard Oil, Farm Service Co., and finally at Ada Agsco Co. Also during this time, she was an active partner with her husband in the Schmidt Flying Service and Ben Schmidt Trucking. When not working they loved going out to their cabin on White Earth Lake. In their later years Doris and Bennie enjoyed their winter homes in Apache Junction and Mesa, AZ. Doris made many wonderful friends from across the country while wintering in Arizona.
Doris enjoyed bowling, flying, boating, fishing, snowmobiling and doing many crafts. In Arizona, Doris was in craft clubs and card clubs. She was also a member of the Ada Garden Club, Lake Ida Homemakers Club, Ladies Aid of Grace Lutheran Church, a life member of the Norman County Blood Bank, American Legion Auxiliary, and the VFW Auxiliary. Doris was a faithful member of Grace Lutheran Church in Ada and worshiped regularly in the Sunland Village Auditorium in Mesa.
Doris is survived by her brother, Ronald (Carolyn) Baker, of Ada, and several nieces and nephews. Doris was preceded in death by her husband, Bennie, her parents, Alex and Lucy, two brothers, Kenneth and Leo, and her nephews, Robert Baker and John Baker. Doris' life was that of a honest, hardworking and faithful servant. She will be greatly missed.
Funeral: 11:00AM Saturday, February 23, 2019, at Grace Lutheran Church, Ada, MN.
Visitation: Friday, February 22, 2019, from 5:00PM to 7:00PM with a 6:30PM prayer service at Fredrikson-Ganje Funeral Home, Ada, MN
Burial: Ada Municipal Cemetery, Ada, MN.
