Donald Thomas York, 80 years old, was a Vietnam Veteran and Airforce Sergeant. Surrounded by his loving family, passed away on August 27, 2026. He will be remembered for his unwavering dedication to service and the warmth he shared with everyone around him.
Airman Second Class Donald T. York, the son of Mrs. and Mr. Donald W. York, served at Pleiku Air Base in Vietnam from 1964 to 1968. He was a member of the “Red Horse” Rapid Engineer Deployable Heavy Operational Repair Squadron Engineers. This specialized unit was deployed to Vietnam to complete a wide range of construction projects essential to supporting military operations.
During his time with the “Red Horse” Squadron, Airman York and his fellow unit members built several important facilities. Their projects included the construction of a post office, a vehicle maintenance building, and a transient receiver’s site, among other structures. These contributions played a vital role in the daily operations and infrastructure of Pleiku Air Base, providing necessary support for personnel and equipment throughout their deployment.
Don York built a distinguished career as a Regional Sales Manager for Napa Filters/Dana Corporation, a role he held from the 1980’s until his retirement in 2006. His dedication to his profession was matched by his commitment to community service. He also made a positive impact on the community by employing local youth, teaching them valuable skills in carpentry and entrepreneurship.
Beyond his corporate career, Don was a private business owner in partnership with Laureen Vilas. Together, they operated several businesses, including Rough Fish Company, Anishinaabe Wild Rice, a T-Shirt Company, a powwow vendor, and a Gift Shop. Through these ventures, Don demonstrated his entrepreneurial spirit and his commitment to supporting local culture and commerce.
Don was an avid outdoorsman, duck hunter, fisherman, trapper, and storyteller. He dedicated his life to his family, cherishing moments spent at family gatherings and one-on-one time with his children and grandchildren. Grandpa Don shared many adventures with his grandson Jimmy, attending gun shows together and teaching him important life skills, especially how to live off the land.
