Donald Petry, 86, Ada, MN, died Tuesday, August 11, 2015, at Sanford Health, Fargo, ND.
He was born October 31, 1928 in Lockhart Township to Albert and Alma (Leiser) Petry. Don grew up in Lockhart, MN, and attended Country School near his home. He joined the US Army National Guard in June of 1948. Don was activated in January of 1950, and served as a Staff Sergeant in the motor pool in Japan.
On June 4, 1960, Don married Ethel Germolus at Zion Lutheran Church, Ada, and together they raised five children. Don loved to farm! He was active in farming his entire life and enjoyed livestock trucking--Don began livestock trucking at age 16 and retired at age 82.
Don was an active supporter of 4-H all his life and was honored with the Friend of 4-H Award in 1996. Don and Ethel were honored with the Norman County Valley Farmer and Homemaker award in 1997. He was active on the Ada School Board from 1968-1977, and served as chairman in 1977. Don was a proud a member of the VFW and Ada Veteran's Honor Guard from 1951-1963. He served on the Lockhart Township board for 40 years (1970-2010). And, he was a life-long member of First English Lutheran Church, Lockhart, MN, and served in numerous officer positions. He enjoyed traveling, card games, croquet and spending time with his family.
Don is survived by his wife of 55 years, Ethel, rural Ada; sons, David (Tracy), Aitkin, MN, Michael (Lynn) of Ada, Steven, Ada, daughter, Kristi (Rodney) Tudor, Garrison, NY and Jeffrey (Melissa) Petry, Ada; three grandchildren, Tate (Katherine) Petry, Katie Petry, and Jessica Tudor; one brother, Luverne (Carol), Ada, and sister, Elaine Thorsteinson, Greenfield, IN, sisters-in-law, Laurel Petry, Fargo, ND, and Delaine Petry, Fargo, ND. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers: Alvin, Vernon, and Leroy, one brother-in-law, Orville Thorsteinson, and one sister-in-law, Mernice Petry.
Funeral: 11:00AM, Friday, August 14, 2015, at Zion Lutheran Church,
Ada, MN.
Visitation: 5-7PM Thursday with a Prayer Service at 6:30PM at the Fredrikson-Ganje Funeral Home, Ada, MN.
Burial: Ada City Cemetery, Ada, MN.
