Donald Allen Gunkel, Borup, MN passed away on Tuesday, January 5, 2021 at Abbott Northwestern Hospital in Minneapolis, MN, at the age of 77.

Donald was the youngest of 3 children, born to Carl and Velma (Brown) Gunkel on September 30, 1943 in Fargo, ND. His parents farmed by Hillsboro, ND until 1947 when they moved to a farm west of Borup. He attended school in Borup. After he graduated high school he worked with his dad on the farm. In 1962 he was awarded grand champion at the Minnesota State Fair with a 600 pound gelding. In March of 1975 he was united in marriage to Fran Hanson, they had one daughter, Bethany. After his father passed away, he began working for Peppel Brothers on their farm from 1987-2005. He also worked at the Red River Valley Speedway, Buffalo River Speedway, Norman County East School District, Heritage Art Center in Twin Valley, MN, and for other farmers around Borup. He was very involved in Winchester Church, he was the janitor and head usher for over 20 years. He checked the church every day and made the BEST coffee every Sunday morning. Donald was also a former member of the Community Club and the Lion's Club.

Donny enjoyed racing to the fullest. Dirt, track, sprints (his favorite), enduro, it didn't matter, he loved them all! He watched Nascar faithfully every Sunday. A fond memory is of him sitting in front of the television, yelling "Get on the gas!! Get on the gas!!"  He enjoyed going to races, but as his health declined, he wasn't able to attend those as much as he wanted anymore. Donny also had a love for western movies and watched Gunsmoke almost as faithfully as Nascar.

He is survived by his daughter, Beth Gunkel, Borup, MN; granddaughter, Danica Gunkel, Ada, MN; brother, Dallas (Mae) Gunkel, Fargo, ND; ex-wife, Fran, Halstad, MN; and many cousins.

He was preceded in death by his parents, one brother, paternal and maternal grandparents, and several aunts, uncles and cousins.

Even if Donny had a bad day, he always had a smile on his face. He will be remembered for his willingness to help anyone and his distinctive laugh.

May Donny rest in peace with his Lord.

Funeral: 2:00 PM, Thursday, January 14, 2021 at Winchester Lutheran Church, Borup, MN, following all of the Minnesota and CDC COVID-19 social distancing guidelines. All must wear a mask to attend.

Visitation: One hour before the funeral at the church.

Interment: Winchester Lutheran Cemetery, Borup, MN.
