Donald "Donnie" Leroy Ellegard, 83, Fertile, died Friday, March 19th 2010, in his home.
Donnie was born on March 3, 1927, in the village of Fertile, to Andrew and Julia (Halvorson) Ellegard. He was baptized and confirmed at Concordia Lutheran Church of Fertile. He attended school in Fertile until February 20th, 1945 when he then entered the U.S Navy at the age of 17. He served in the Pacific Theater at the end of World War II and was discharged from the Navy on July 12, 1946. He then returned to Fertile and high school through 1948. He was employed by Northern Pacific Railroad and U.S Post office.
On June 22, 1957, he was united in marriage to LaZona Anderson at Union Lake Church near Winger. Donnie worked at the Fertile Hatchery and Culligan until 1974 when Don and LaZona purchased the Gambles Hardware Store. "Don's Gambles" was open until 1983. Don was a rural mail carrier for the post office from 1983 until his retirement in 1998. LaZona passed away on November 27, 2000.
Donnie was a member of Concordia Lutheran Church, the American Legion, the Fertile Jaycees & the Community Club. Donnie served the Fertile Baseball Association for 15 years, the Fair Meadow Nursing Home Board for 10 years, served as the City Clerk of Fertile for 15 years, and a member of the Fertile Fire Department for 22 years. Donnie will be remembered for his love of family times, growing huge gardens, taking care of his birds, and his endless supply of jokes and stories.
Donnie is survived by two sons, Todd (Holly) of Harwood ND, Nathan (Jayne) of Plymouth MN, a daughter Sheri (Rick) Reilly of Fargo ND, two grandsons- Connor and Tyler, and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, parents, 2 sisters: Esther and Viola, and 6 brothers: Wallace, Alvin, Elmer, Walter, Stanley, and Goodwin.
Funeral Service: 11:00AM Wednesday, March 24, 2010, at Concordia Lutheran Church, Fertile, MN
Visitation: Tuesday from 5-7PM with a 6:30PM prayer service at Erikson-Vik Funeral Home, Fertile, MN.
Burial: Concordia Lutheran Cemetery, Fertile.
