Dolores
Athmann
Jan 20, 1929 — Oct 3, 2021
Detroit Lakes
Dolores Jean Athmann (Dode) was born on January 20, 1929 in Minnewaukan, ND, to Arnold and Ardis (Johnson) Anderson. She passed away October 3, 2021 at the age of 92 at the Ecumen Long Term Care Facility in Detroit Lakes, MN.
Dode married Delore L. Athmann on June 3, 1947 at St. Joseph's Catholic Church in Beaulieu, MN. Following their marriage, they owned and operated the general store in Beaulieu before setting out for Garden Grove, CA, with four children in January of 1960. They returned to Minnesota and continued to own and operate retail businesses in Henning and Mahnomen, MN. Dolores operated Athmann's Clothing Store for 30 years preceding her retirement. She was a member of the Mahnomen High School Class of 1947.
She had an exceptional singing voice and enjoyed singing and soloing in the choir at St Joseph's Church in her younger days. Dolores loved horses, raising and training a number of them for horse shows and pleasure riding. She was a wonderful cook and enjoyed making meals for her many friends and family, whether at home or the cabin on South Twin Lake. She was the kind of woman that optimized class in every role she took on in her life. She was brilliant, kind, generous of heart, and always put her family first..She was one of the most well read individuals in our family, reading thousands of books during her lifetime. She truly had a "masters degree" in literature.
Dode and Delore loved polka music and going to local and regional polka dances and events. They enjoyed hosting polka bands in their home or lake cabin to provide great music for the local area throughout the years.
They were true Winter Texans, spending their retirement years with family and friends in the Rio Grande Valley area near Alamo, TX. They especially enjoyed the trips to the Mexican side of the river with friends to enjoy good food, beverages and a mariachi band.
Dolores was a member of St. Michael's Catholic Church, Mahnomen Booster Club, and the Red Hat Society.
She is survived by her husband, Delore; brother, Gary; children: Michael (Mary Dufner), Susan Seccareccio, Joann (Chris Marcoux), Bradley (Patricia). She is also survived by seven grandchildren: Dr. Anthony Athmann (Sara Erie), Andrea Athmann-Luksik, Dr. Christine Athmann (Dr. Justin Gerstner) Justin Kuehl, Ryan Kuehl, Alexandra Athmann-Marcoux, Ashley Athmann and seven great grandchildren: Gavin, Braden, Mckenna, and Emma Luksik; Lilia and Amelia Athmann, Aryannah Kuehl and Genevieve Gerstner.
She will be greatly missed by all that knew her. A heart felt thank you to the staff of Ecumen Detroit Lakes and Hospice of the Red River Valley for the wonderful care and support for Dode in her declining months.
