Obituary

Dennis McCollum, 69, Fertile, Minnesota, passed away at his home on Friday, April 29, 2011, surrounded by his loving family. He died while fighting a battle with leukemia.

Dennis Delaine McCollum was born to Loren and Mary (First) McCollum on August 6, 1941, at Bejou, MN. He grew up attending Bejou and Mahnomen schools.

On May 2, 1964, Dennis was united in marriage to Cynthia Brtek at the Catholic Church in Bejou. Their marriage was blessed with three children. After they were married, he worked for a farmer, Lawrence Walters of Beltrami, MN, while living in their upstairs apartment. He also worked for American Crystal Sugar Company. Starting in March of 1965, Dennis
> began working at Homark in Red Lake Falls, MN, until he retired in 2007. In October of 1965, the couple moved to Fertile where they have resided since.He also installed carpet in his spare time.
Dennis enjoyed camping, gardening, deer hunting, ice fishing and spearing. He loved watching the Twins and Vikings on TV, and could not wait for the Polk County Fair to come each summer. He enjoyed driving his tractor to the woods to get a load of wood to stack and burn at his home. His greatest love of all was spending as much time with his eight grandchildren as he could, and watching them participate in their activities.

Dennis is survived by his wife of almost 47 years, Cynthia, Fertile,
children, Jeffrey, Fertile,Janelle (Trent) Brekken, Crookston, and
Jerry, Red Lake Falls, MN, 8 grandchildren, Austin, Avery, Athan & Adison McCollum, Derek, Austen, Abbigail & Denissa Brekken, his siblings, Phyllis (Robert) Miller, Thief River Falls, MN, Ordell (Doris) McCollum, Bejou, MN, Marily (David) Natwick, Winger, MN, Terry (Theresa) McCollum, Bejou, MN, and Laurie Mike) Semanko, Fargo, ND, and many nieces, nephews, and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, grandparents, aunts, and uncles.

Funeral Mass: 11:00am Wednesday, May 4, 2011, at St. Joseph Catholic Church, Fertile, MN.

Visitation: Tuesday from 5-7pm with a 6:30pm prayer service at Erikson-Vik Funeral Home.
