Dennis "Candy Bar" Omang, age 66, of Winger, MN, passed away on Friday, August 7, 2026, at Fairview Hospital in Minneapolis, MN.
Dennis Richard Omang was born January 8, 1960, in Mahnomen, MN, the son of Julius and Gertrude (Folstrom) Omang. He grew up in the Winger area where he attended school. Dennis was baptized and confirmed at Dovre Lutheran Church in Winger. At a young age, he began helping at the Gorilla Truck Stop in Winger, cleaning windows and doing errands for the truckers who affectionately gave him the nickname "Candy Bar". Then, in his early teen years, Candy Bar started working for Lynn Lucken. This endeavor was followed by driving semi for Ole Gunderson, which ultimately led to him owning and operating his own semi. On October 30, 1982, Dennis was united in marriage to Kathy Erlandson. The young couple made their home in Gonvick, MN, for a few years before moving to Winger in 1987, where they raised their family. The couple was blessed with a daughter and four sons.
Over the years, Candy Bar traveled countless miles and owned a few different semis. His wife and all his children were lucky enough to travel some of those miles with him to different parts of the Unites States. If you knew Candy Bar, you knew he was playful, could be a jokester and had a great sense of humor, but he was also very caring and had the most generous heart. His biggest accomplishment was his family, and he absolutely loved them all, but his grandchildren put the sparkle in his eye. He loved spending time with them, especially if they needed a nap! Candy Bar also enjoyed playing cards and Bingo and was a member of the Mahnomen Rod and Gun Club. He will be missed by all who knew and loved him.
Dennis leaves behind his wife of 43 years, Kathy of Winger; daughter, Hailey (Bryan) Dahl of Winger; sons: Brandon Omang of Erskine, MN, Daniel (Liz) Omang of Ada, MN, Trevor (Nikki Wukawitz) Omang also of Winger, and Nicholas Omang of Glenwood, MN; eight grandchildren: Julius, Gracie, Noah, Jonas, Josslyn, Claire, Bronx, and Stella; two sisters, Gloria (LeRoy) Steinbrenner and Luann Dufault, both of Fosston, MN; a sister-in-law, Kellie Omang of Grand Forks, ND; two aunts, Mabel (Walter) Helgeson of Bejou, MN, and Valeria (Richard) Pavlish also of Bejou; and numerous nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his parents, Julius and Gertrude; in-laws, Oswald and Bernice; a daughter-in-law, Melanee Omang; two sisters, Lynda Omang and Eunice Henderson; and a brother, Don Omang.
Blessed be the memory of Dennis "Candy Bar" Omang.
A Memorial Service will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Friday, August 21, 2026, at Immanuel Lutheran Church, Bejou, MN, with a Time of Gathering beginning at 5:00 p.m. at the church.
